| 53257 | 2002-06-08 09:46:00 | Hi I am a student and next semester part of my course will be on operating systems,and I would like to try out Suse linux, mainly because it seems to have much less 'hype' if you will, than some of the other distros, is it available in NZ cheaply or would I be better off just using Mandrake or Redhat. | 53263 | 2002-06-10 04:32:00 | They are all Linux. 'Hype' doesn't matter. RedHat is nice. Mandrake is probably nice. I never got Corel to install. FTLinux is good. Slackware is good, and very flexible to load. Haven't tried Suse. I've got CDs for a few others. I've even got a set of 4 floppies which installs a minumum Linux on a DOS partition. You will probably find more people using Mandrake and RedHat in NZ. So more people who know about them than Suse. You will certainly find them easier to get (by buying some CDs rather than downloading a few GB). The 'Brands' are distributions. RedHat made a very good patch and module installer, which is pretty standard now (though look for APT, which looks to be a great extension). The Linux is Linux. People tend to think that what *they* use must be the best. After all, that's what they chose, and who will dare to question theri judgement? There are even some people who say that Microsoft make good software. (Or so I hear). |

Suse 8.0's a stable system though, has good driver support, 7cd's 1 dvd plenty of programs.I have used Redhat, Mandrake, Debian. Suse is the best! If you want a cheap op, buy a magazine called Linux Format, normally has one or two Distro,s on DVD in iso format. I tried one called Redmond Linux which installs in windows.Very user friendly. |
