53142 2002-06-08 04:40:00 I recently acquired a new computer AMD 1700+ running Win XP.
I use an external modem SwannSmart 56K which worked perfectly with my old system.
I now have an intermittent problem in which approximately every four to five days, when I try to connect up to the internet, the modem is not recognised at all by my new system.
On advice from the computer help desk, I have temporally fixed the problem by unplugging the Modem totally and then reconnecting it.
This fixes the problem for a few days only to have it recur randomly in a few days.
The modem is relatively new (About 1 Year) and the serial connections on the modem and the computer look normal.
I would be grateful for any suggestions.

53143 2002-06-08 05:19:00 Have you installed the latest modem drivers for XP?

Try...

Perhaps XP is only assigning 'generic' drivers, which may be causing a problem.

53144 2002-06-09 03:15:00 I would try another serial cable (that is, the one from the COM port to the modem). If unpluging and unplugging 'fixes' it for a couple of days, it's not drivers.

Connections used to be the major cause of computer problems (in 'real' computers). Software became the major problem with PCs.
