53379 2002-06-09 06:52:00 Hi.
We are running windows 98 and were wondering if there is a possibility to protect the computer against unwanted use, ie lock it up so others can not access our computer and/or files(whatever is easiest)?
Thank you very much for your help.

53380 2002-06-09 07:17:00 The easiest way is to password protect the bios, so you need to enter a pssword for the computer to boot. However, if you forget the password you will have to reset the bios by opening the case.
All you need to do is predd 'DEL' or 'ESC' or 'F1' or whatever key is required when you first turn on the PC. It will display a menu, one of the items will be password protection. Just choose the security, enter the password, and then save configuration.

53381 2002-06-09 12:16:00 Another option is...this one depends on how important or critical the files is in the harddrive..make the harddrive removable, so u can take it home with u, use a 'mobile rack' or 'removable hard disk carrier and frame'.

If ur comfortable fiddling with your pc u can do this by urself, if not get someone who can do it.

The advantage of this one is u can take home the harddrive with u and other reasons, the disadvantage of this is, you have to be careful when u take it home, that u dont dropped it, cuz its gonna be unreadable and unusable and put it in a static bag if ur gonna choose this option.

53382 2002-06-10 03:34:00 You can put password control on Windows startup but that can be bypassed if someone really wants to. It depends on the knowledge and determination of those from whom you want to protect yor system. For instance one way to restrict access to your computer is to hide/lock away the power cord or the computer itself. Guest (0)
