53352 2002-06-09 04:26:00 With zFree I used to nearly always get a 56000bps connection but these days it is always 33600bps with my new ISP. Other ISPs have been 33600bps as well, but at 'off-peak' times my Actrix connection was 56000bps.

My modem is circa 1998 and has the most recent drivers that I could find.

I emailed the ISP and they suggested a few things which wouldn't work, so what are the chances of getting a faster connection if I bought a new modem?

Running Win98 if that's relevant.

53353 2002-06-09 04:39:00 Hard to tell, You could buy a new modem and start getting 55kbps again or you could see no improvment at all.
What sort of modem do you have at the moment?
Maybe you could try upgrading the drivers.

53354 2002-06-09 04:45:00 I used to have a smimiliar type of problem with speeds ranging from 33 up to 56000kbs. This setteled to a steady 48000 after telecom replaced my phone lines I switched my ISP. Then I read a thread on here suggesting a modem help page so I did and now am connecting at 115200bps. I have little knowledge about modems etc but I do know that my speed has increased very noticably and I am now smiling when online not off making yet another coffee. Have a look at http://www.modemhelp.org/ Guest (0)
53355 2002-06-09 05:04:00 Just thought of something else to check.
Go to your modem properties and where it lists the modem click on configure then make sure the highest speed is selected. Just something to check incase it has been set lower for some reason.

53356 2002-06-09 05:27:00 your 115k reported speed is NOT your connect speed.

Its just the (normal) speed that your PC talks to your modem at, as if that what its reporting as your connect speed it is indicative that you are NOT using the right driver....

Generic drivers often have this effect.

53357 2002-06-09 05:32:00 In my professional opinion its your ISP!

115000kpbs is what the puter can talk to the modem 56kbs is what the max dial up connection is(if its a 56k modem).

I have bought a $45 new PCI v.92 56k modem and it works better than I have ever had before. On paradise thru saturn. Most connections @ 53.2.

53358 2002-06-09 05:42:00 Hi Susan

I have 3 different brand and types of modem, PCI internal, serial connect hardware modem and laptop modem.

I connect between 49.2 and 52k, the laotop modem is usually slightly higher. (Can connect at 56k in some cities, but not at home). Laptop modems are often 'cellular protocol' I understand and are more tolerant but are expensive.

In reality there is no noticeable difference to download speeds. A faster connect may simply result in higher error rates, and more packets of data having to be resent in a worst case situation.

The hardware serial modem is consistently the most reliable.

Beware USB and PCI modems as they are usually software modems and do consume significant resources.

Have gone broadband now anyway :-)

53359 2002-06-09 10:41:00 Hi Susan,

I am with Globe.Net and generally get connection of about 52,000, except lately is about 48,000 sometimes and as low as about 31,000 at odd times.
However, I really am answering your post to let you know of a free modem test page I found while surfing.

I don't know how good it is but it is interesting *S*

homepage.eircom.net

I use the first of the two tests available and repeat it twice as it varies slightly each time.
There are some interesting facts and info links on the left hand panel of the page, and if you click on the link on the page that starts...'Is your connection optimized?' the info about internet boosters is worth looking at if you are tempted to use a booster.

53360 2002-06-09 10:41:00 Hi Susan

Hardware modems are basically easier to configure(?spelling)
and give more reliable results, but cost more.

Winmodems(software modems) are harder to configure depend on power of processer and because the drivers appear to be a little flaky sometimes, often give less then optimum results.

Actual performance, given a good modem setup, depends on you O\S, its fine tuning, line conditions & ISP loading on bandwidth.

I can only suggest that as you are getting 56bps from your ISP you are getting as much as they can give you,at that time and the lowering of performance in peak times is a result of spreading more connections over limited bandwidth, a new modem would not make any difference.

Similarly line performance seems up to scratch as you can get 56000bps. so all that is left is to optimize you O\S to your connection.

Personally I have tried many of the 'Net Speedup' programs available on the Net but in the end have used the Registry 'Tweaks' available here:

members.aol.com

Just scroll down until you find your O\S (I'm presuming your using Winders) and look up the Internet tweaks. Don't use any of the other 'tweaks' as I wish to have the fastest K6-266 around!!!

53361 2002-06-09 10:57:00 Aaaaaargh!! My *best* result is 26400bps!!

Is Sunday night 'peak' time or what? I'll try again in the morning.

Thanks for the link Carol, I'll have a good look around the site this week and see if I can tweak a bit more :-)

It will also be useful for testing my connection on another PC.
