53298 2002-06-09 00:43:00 I am trying to install win98 se onto a brand new PC .. Athlon 1700XP 40Gb Hdd & 256MB ram. Copied all the setup files onto a directory on the Hdd but when I run setup it freezes at the 19% file copy stage.
Tried 1/2 doz times with the same result ... tried loading directly from the CD-rom but get the same errors. I have tried a different version of windows with the same problem. I have read the setuplog.txt file but cant make alot of sense of it. Have installed windows dozens of times this same way with a problem.
Any suggestions???

53299 2002-06-09 02:11:00 first thing is to check bios is set up correctly and check that the antivirus option is turned OFF. Guest (0)
53300 2002-06-09 02:37:00 Hello Paul,

Are you getting an error message when the setup freezes, if you are what is it, for instance a SUWIN message usually means a hardware problem of some sorts, bad ram being a prime contender.

53301 2002-06-09 04:06:00 There are no error msgs at all it just freezes at the 19% mark. All the bios settings seem correct and I did try adjusting several settings. Guest (0)
53302 2002-06-09 05:24:00 Obvious: are you using win98 start up disk (with CD ROM support)? The HDD is FDISK'd and Foramtted? (I suggest 10gb partitions). You get to the command prompt and type x: setup
x: being cd rom? It scans disks and no problems then copies system files for installation? BIOS settings pnp OS etc (should be default these days)?

53303 2002-06-09 06:22:00 Yes exactly as you say except it freezes during system file copy after I have selected install options and entered registration number etc. The only way to get out is to switch off and reboot again. then it yells me to run setup again and select safe recovery option .... but it dosen't give me that option so i quick format and try again .... same problem again Guest (0)
53304 2002-06-09 06:50:00 this might help...i had the desame scenario problem like u, but different cpu and mobo.

theres are jumpers in the motherboard to put the right setting of the cpu speed...now instead of using 'auto', u have to do it manually to select the right speed for the cpu...hopefully u got the mobo manual with u...and right speed of the ram.

now in the bios u have tomanually select the right cpu speed setting also, if the bios didnt selected it right.
