| 53730 | 2002-06-11 00:39:00 | A friend of mine was recently distressed to discover that the new notebook she'd bought for home and business use was incapable of being used to join a Network Domain - so she was unable to log in to the Lan at the company she was contracting for. The reason? The notebook came pre-installed with Windows XP Home (which doesn't allow the machine to join a windows domain) rather than Windows XP Professional (which does). Had she been informed of this at the time she purchased the machine she would have opted for Windows XP Professional instead of Home. But she wasn't. And she's now left in the difficult situation of having to upgrade her version of Windows XP Home to Windows XP Professional - which because it is an OEM version is not easy to do. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, what did the vendor offer as a solution? Does anybody else think that shipping a network disabled Operating System on a Notebook - which by its very nature is designed to be portable and flexible - is a very stink idea??? |

It sounds like a tricky situation to be in really, because most computers, including notebooks, seem to be shipped with home edition of XP. If your friend told the retailer what she was going to do with the machine then they have to fix it. She should go straight back to them and tell them to install XP Pro. She will probably have to pay the difference in the price for the upgrade but not for their labour to do it. |

I just thought it was worth posting a message to see if anyone else had been caught by this sort of thing, and to let others know to waatch out for it. |
