i have run the recovery console and copied the ntldr and ntdetecte.com from the i386 folder in the xp cdrom

53796 2002-06-11 08:32:00 I am a bit rusty (have done NT 3.51 exams, but none since), but you might want to check boot.ini and make sure that hasn't been corrupted. Check the manual for what it should look like (a lot of it doesn't make sense, completely counter common sense).

There is a list of the NT files that must be in root, try to find them on microsoft.com and check they are present, but you seem to have done what I would have done.

53797 2002-06-11 09:40:00 If that doesn't work - run install again and install to a new folder. Boot.ini should now detect two versions of windows. Set the default back to the one you had before in boot.ini and delete the new install.
Doesn't take long.
