53652 2002-06-10 09:38:00 i use a 56k modem & use paradise

iam downloading 600 mb file off the file sharing programs
the speed is 3 to 4 kb/sec

i dont run any other things same time
how can i increase the speed

there are many programs out which say 50 % faster speed that normal speed
is it bull **** or what

53653 2002-06-10 10:50:00 In my personal opinion from personal experience, those download accelerators are useless if you're on a standard 56K connection. It works best if you have broadband connection 'cos it makes use of your bandwidth by splitting the download into several segments and downloading it all simultaneously which makes use of the bandwidth more effectively. 53654 2002-06-10 11:08:00 Its probably because the person your are downloading from either has a 56k modem too (they are only 33.6k uploading) or are limiting how much of their bandwidth you can use. Guest (0)
53655 2002-06-10 12:48:00 Your speed is not too bad. I have explained this recently in a previous post, but will go over it again for you.

Your modem's speed is 56kilobits per second. The speed shown by your sharing program is 3 - 4 kilobytes per second.

Also, there are 1000 bits in a kilobit, but 1024 bytes in a kilobyte.

Thus 56kb = 56000bits

56000/8 = 7000bytes per second.

7000/1024 = 6.8kilobytes per second.

this is less than the 3-4 youu are seeing, but many factors contribute to this. 1 - the speed displayed by your file sharing app is determined by taking the amount of the file received, and dividing by the time taken to receive that part of the file. Now as pointed out by Graham Lees, bytes transfered over a modem are surrounded by 1start bit, and one stop bit. This is not measured by the file sharing app, but does still have to be transferred by the modem. This means 10 bits for every byte measured by the file sharing app.

So you effective maximum is 5.5kbytes per sec.

Now, coupled with poor quality lines, other internet activity on your PC, lost data (a big factor), slow upload speed at the other end, and many other factors, you are experiencing a slow down of 35%. Not too bad considering.

Accept what you have, or go to jetstream etc.

Of course, a problem with you modem, drivers, or setup may be the cause of slower speed, and these things can be fixed to improve performance, so go ahead and play with internet speed tweakers if you like.

tweaking the MTU settings is worth while. it won't make a huge difference but you might see that 3 to 4 kb/sec rise closer to 5.
Keep in mind that windows MTU settings are preset for LANs and not dial-up modems.

53658 2002-06-11 10:12:00 not quite. with win9x the mtu changes from lan to modem settings depending on whats used(ie it will go from 1500 lan to 576 modem). i usually find there isn't much speed increase but it is more stable and you will get a better average download speed.

one word of cation. if you have a lan be carefull tweaking the mtu settings as it will make the lan the same speed as the net. so you may need to use another protocol for the lan file haring.
