54526 2002-06-15 13:39:00 My laptop locks up solid at completely random times while using the internet, ctrl+alt+del does nothing, the only resolution is to turn the thing off and start again. As you can imagine this gets a little annoying :-(
Are there any known problems with IE6 that could cause this? It has only locked up when using IE6 on the internet. Could there be a conflict with something else like a virus checker? I searched thru the knowledge base thingamy at Microsoft's website and couldnt find anything helpful.
This is what we are dealing with: Windows 2000 Pro SP2, Office 2000, IE6, AVG Antivirus, newest driver available for Lucent winmodem (built in) all on an Acer Laptop. Any help much appreciated!

54527 2002-06-16 03:49:00 Hi Jamie:

It has only locked up when using IE6 on the internet.

WHY DON'T YOU UN-INSTALL IE6, AND REVERT TO IE5.5.....if you upgraded to IE6, you can reinstall IE5.5 by going to ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS in control panel.

Regards, ALAN

54528 2002-06-16 04:38:00 May I suggest you use a different browser, perhaps? I have found that Mozilla is good, it's free and it's open source. It's basically the same as netscape 6 but netscape 6 seemed a little buggy to me for some reason.

try ftp.mozilla.org

54529 2002-06-16 05:03:00 It could be spyware, try running adaware on it (www.lavasoft.de).

I would also reccomend visiting windows update to get this weeks lot of patches.

54530 2002-06-16 06:23:00 Thanks for the help guys! Yeah I know it sounds horribly obvious - ditch the browser, but I guess I was concerned it might be something more than that. Anyways I will change browsers and see how it goes. If I could just ask one more question..... :-)
Same laptop & software etc, Windows 2000 reports the CPU as being a PII 150Mhz (which is kinda impossible) and several 3rd party software tools report the same speed as well as a 33Mhz FSB. The actual CPU is a PII 300. Anyways, I performed a recovery on the machine with the factory win98se disk, and the CPU and bus are now reported correctly. Whats up with that?? Is there some sort of bug that fouls up Win2k's ability to report correctly? Could this be related to the locking up maybe? I guess I should just ignore it and run 2k, but I thought I would run it past you guys first for comment. Thanks again.
