1304559 2012-10-02 01:32:00 Hey all

My WD Elements External HD does not show up in My Computer, it says it installs but I cannot find it. It also does not show up in disk management. I have quite a bit of data on the HD and need it as it is my back up to my lap top. Any help with this?

Regards

1304560 2012-10-02 01:59:00 Have you tried on more than one USB port?
Also try on another computer to be sure.
Then the last thing you could try is another power supply (if it has a power supply) but other than that I'd say the drive has failed.
If it's out of warranty, or the data is more valuable than a replacement drive, you could open it up and pull out the internal hard drive and plug into a computer directly to see if it is readable.

1304561 2012-10-02 02:30:00 open up the disk manager and see if it's given a drive letter. If not, give it one. 8ftmetalhaed (14526)

Exactly my first thought. Also make sure you plug it into the back of a PC, not the front ports, as the front ports generally have less power going to them.

OP said that it doesn't show up in disk management. :(

I got caught with the Power Supply trick. I was looking for an answer to the same question on Google and lo and behold I found a write up on the very same problem.

Replacing the power supply didn’t help, so I hard wired it to a spare socket on the computer power supply and it hasn’t missed a beat since. :)

Both Power Supplies were working and drove other gear so the only explanation I can give is the drive didn’t like the “Dirty” power being provided.

Bit “Left Field” isn’t it but I guess it makes sense. :D

1304565 2012-10-02 04:45:00 Yea have tried different computers, different ports as well. It has no alternative power source. Is there anyway of getting the Data off it if it is stuffed? PCnoobey (16907)
1304566 2012-10-02 04:53:00 If it is stuffed the only way to get data off it would be to send it to a data recovery service company like Digital Recovery in Hamilton.
But be prepared for a big cost in the range of $400-$800 +gst depending on what's wrong with the drive.
It it's a faulty board then it will be cheaper than if they have to replace a head.

1304567 2012-10-02 05:13:00 As CYaBro posted, # 2 if you don't mind blowing the warranty( if its still within it) then remove the drive.

Sometimes the Drive its self may be perfectly OK. The circuit board in the external case may have blown. Seen it countless times, drive sounds like its spinning up, but wont read/display. remove the drive from the enclosure, plug it into a PC and away it goes.

The only problem that "may" arise is some external drives have the circuit board connected directly to the HDD, and they can't easily be plugged into a PC's SATA port, others the board simply pulls off and theres standard SATA connections.
