1280279 2012-06-07 05:56:00 ........or back any of the pairs of people in a three legged race against a person who was running on their own but had been allowed to compete anyway?

I had reason to write to someone in Wellington about the spending cap of $50K on the petition for a Citizen's Initiated referendum on the Asset Sales, and how it compared with what the Government was allowed to spend. Here's the answer I got:

"Dear John
It is true that we can only spend $50,000 on promoting the campaign, which has unfortunately limited a lot of our scope for things like pamphlets and posters. ‘Their’ side don’t have spending caps. The government are able to spend over 100 million dollars in promoting asset sales, and they have indicated that they will do so: www.3news.co.nz (www.3news.co.nz)asset-sales-sell-off-to-cost-120-million/tabid/1607/ (www.3news.co.nz)articleID/254883/Default.aspx (www.3news.co.nz)

.
The logic behind the discrepancy is that the government has no limits to how they can spend the money, and so they have allocated funds to do what they feel they were elected to do. CIR spending is capped to prevent organisations using financial power to initiate a referendum. In an election campaign the government and opposition have similar spending allowances, but when it is citizens against the government, the law heavily favours the government."

Now do you understand why you haven't really heard much about it?
