1279662 2012-06-04 23:54:00 Do electronics shops tell the truth, if you ask them for an item that hasn't been on display, or would some of them cheat on you and give you a former display item? ssssss (2100)
1279663 2012-06-04 23:56:00 Some of them do. Some of them also give out returned goods as new. Re DSE, the fellow who bought an external HDD that turned out to have movies downloaded on it. 8ftmetalhaed (14526)
1279664 2012-06-04 23:59:00 Depends on the shop, the item, and the honesty of the staff I guess. Bit of a vague question. Got an experience you want to share? If I was buying a new item, I would expect it to be sealed - depending what it was of course. Iantech (16386)
1279665 2012-06-05 00:02:00 I haven't amy proof that I have been cheated, but I suspect it happened once. Can't rember which shop. ssssss (2100)
1279666 2012-06-05 00:31:00 Bit of a wasted question then, isn't it?? Zippity (58)
1279667 2012-06-05 00:46:00 Bought a Nilfix cleaner last Friday, it was the display item and they knocked $200 off the price, being a Tellus brand name, it will see us out. Our first Tellus is still here, bought 1981.

Bought a new stove off Harvey Norman last month, which they palmed off as brand new, wife noticed a small indentation on the side, when brought to HN notice, they offered to take back, but a replacement was not available in ChCh. so $200 was knocked off the price here too.

Seems to be the going figure for this type of thing, lol.

Stove was in original carton toooo.

Ps. I do the luxing and I don't like the bulky new machine.

1279668 2012-06-05 01:01:00 Yonks ago when I bought my Eee 701, DSE told me it was an ex-display unit before selling it to me. When we bought a printer from a different branch, they also gave us a discount as the printer was ex-display and had no packaging. pcuser42 (130)
1279669 2012-06-05 02:25:00 DSE does. You see them various cables thta might be taped up in the display container.
Noel Leeming, no stock left so they wipe down the display model and hand you it after being boxed up.

DSE again, a mate was buying a laptop, so I said what about a discount since it's a display model ... he waffles a bit then says oh .. we do have a new unit at the back ....

1279670 2012-06-05 03:12:00 Used to see it quite regularly with cameras at a camera store that is no longer in business. Personally I quite like to get a display model provided it is acknowledged as such. Often a substantial discount is given, you know that the item has been checked in store before being displayed and if you get all the bits that are supposed to be in the box, you can let them dispose of the packaging for you.

Of course, not all display items are tested in store (cookers and refrigerators would be a bit difficult to do more than a cursory check anyway) and packaging will help to protect against transit damage if it needs to be delivered by truck but I have bought two laptops that were on display for substantially less than the shelf price and was more than happy with both. Nothing is more disappointing than getting your new whatever out of the box, switching it on and, quick as a flash, absolutely nothing happens.

1279671 2012-06-05 03:34:00 I am quite sure that shops do sell display goods. If it is the last item of a line then why not sell it with the price marked down to get rid of it. As long as they tell me, I do not mind. Bobh (5192)
