1279100 2012-06-02 01:59:00 I am about to venture into buying these online.

I have 2 recommended places but before I do, does anyone know about the lens thickness?

My first had a thick lens on the right (cause the vision difference between them is quite large) and I hated them.
The second were better. But they still ended up thick at the edges.

I know it can be done with normal thickness cause a friend of mine has vision as bad as mine (and different in each eye like me), and his glasses are normal looking. He did pay some awful price here in NZ though.

So what do I need to look for online, seems to be a lot about progressive versus single, tints and so on but not this?

1279101 2012-06-02 02:22:00 Try to avoid small (in size) progressive lenses.

http://www.39dollarglasses.com/ is a great supplier of online glasses :)

1279102 2012-06-02 03:55:00 There are 4 ways to minimise lens thickness.

2 of them will add to the cost, the third and forth will influence your choice of frames.

If the online place is only looking at minimising price, then the first two factors may not be options.

If you are able to or prepared to volunteer the numbers to your prescription I can offer more info specific to your case.

Key options are:

1. High index (denser) lens material. These give a thinner result, at a higher cost.

2. Specially worked (grind / custom made) lenses, as opposed to 'stock' (pre-made) lenses, made to 'knife edge' thinckness.

3. Smallest possible frame to minimise the total lens area and width. John Lennon style will conceal a lot of power.

4. Avoid rimless frames. Lenses for rimless frames need a certain degree of thickness in order to make them durable (as the lenses become part of the structure, and take the stress of any mishandling). A plastic rimmed frame, while looking bulkier than metal frames will also conceal more of the lens thickness.

Frankly, I'd feel little confidence of any online purchase allowing the options of High Index, Specially Worked, and Knife edge. These are details you'd really need to discuss with them before parting with any cash, and their ability to answer your questions will depend on whether they have any clue or not.
Knife edge is not an option on minus lenses.

Stck lenses cost sod-all, but in the plus powers can give a very bulky edge.

1279103 2012-06-02 05:53:00 Thanks Paul, at work so I;ll post the prescription later.
I figured rimless won't work, don't like them anyway, too flimsy looking.

But I know my friend got his lenses looking the same both sides - I want to avoid the one side thinner than the other look.

I can live with thick - ish on both sides, but it looks looney having one thicker than the other.

I can live with higher cost too, just want to avoid NZ prices....too much for my sad budget.

1279104 2012-06-02 06:54:00 Hi pctek,
I didn't know that one could get prescription lenses and frames online. I have just recently (six weeks) got new specs from Specsavers, around $530 all up. They are three stage progressive lenses. Oval gold coloured metal frames, and I got polarised clip ons for driving with. Put them on the plastic, just finished paying for them lol!

I didn't know that Specsavers sold clip on's. They told me that they didn't stock them. At the time I got mine though, they had a free transitions promotion going.

$530!!!!! That's about $400 past my budget.

Don't think PD is required for this question?
