1280187 2012-06-09 03:58:00 I find the term "pakeha" offensive - period.

I call myself a "New Zealander" and enter such on any form when asked my nationality.same here. When I see Govt forms etc that ask for that sort of info and states "New Zealand (Maori)", "New Zealand (Pakeha)", "Asian", "Pacific Islander", etc etc, "Other". I always select the "Other" and write "New Zealander". I was born here, it is who I am. What colour my skin is and where my great great great granny came from shouldnt make any difference (although it seems to when it comes to hand-outs from the Govt).

1280189 2012-06-09 04:20:00 I don't go describing black, or brown colored people as the N word, so why should they, or other people call us Pakiha.

I know they are two different meanings, but I feel personally, at least to me, that Pakiha is the N word equivalent of a white person, If I don't call you a "N word" please don't call me pakiha in return, is how I see it.

I'm waiting for all the angry response, about that i know **** all etc.. But I don't care. What i'm trying to say is, When someone call's me Pakiha, i feel the same way as if a black person would feel when called the "n word". I don't like the term, and I don't like it being used to describe me.

the word pakeha means "eyes on the back of their head" and is not meant to be racist in any way. When European settlers first rowed into NZ the native maori thought they had eyes on the back of their heads because they rowed backwards, at least thats what my nan told me, the word is only as offensive as you make it.

Go back far enough, and it covers all cases, apparently.

1280192 2012-06-09 04:44:00 Good luck trying to say that to a group of Maori. They would probably give you the bash.

Or slap their thigh and pull their tongue out at me.!

1280193 2012-06-09 04:48:00 the word pakeha means "eyes on the back of their head" and is not meant to be racist in any way. When European settlers first rowed into NZ the native maori thought they had eyes on the back of their heads because they rowed backwards, at least thats what my nan told me.I havent heard that before, but it wouldnt surprise me if there was some truth in that. My grandad told me once that "Tuhoe" was a name of a Maori Tribe that liked eating bush rats and that "Tuhoe" translated means "The rat eaters". I dont think Iti and his band of merry terrorists would agree though.:) Iantech (16386)

Are you going to give us a short account of your trip to Thailand?
