1280157 2012-06-08 06:32:00 Another hate is when people use 'less' when they mean 'fewer' . Also hate the expression 'took it off him' when they mean 'took it from him' GRRRRRRR . Surely you meant 'took it off of him' :D

They say English is a living language, and that new words, spellings and meanings have always crept (or crawled) in over time, reflecting the cultures, the conquered, and the usage of the period .

Personally, I would call it 'malignant mutation,' but we do have to accept that the english language has polyglot origins and it certainly has developed organically over the centuries, taking words and meanings from a variety of countries, cultures, and sources . However, some words and phrases these days are the linguistic equivalent of fingernails scraping down a blackboard and make what's left of my hair stand on end .

When it all gets too much I go off and read a good book, preferable written no later that the mid 20th century . For as long as written words continue to be recorded on paper, we will be able to choose to read, write or speak the language as we please and ignore the rest .

My pet hate? The ubiquitous "for free" and I'll tell you that for nothing .

I'm a linguistic luddite, and proud of it . . . . . . . . .

Cheers

Prefect, you know what this means?

We'll be fogbound, cause the sun will no longer be able to burn it off ...

1280161 2012-06-08 07:42:00 That was a bit of a rant. While there are certainly issues that need to be settled it has become very much a gravy train with often very little getting to the people it is meant to. I know of one guy who wanted a loan to get his son through Law school and they wouldn't give him anything and yet the son of one of them running it got the whole lot, vehicle, accomodation and course paid for and to rub salt into the wound he wasn't even as well qualified.
It doesn't help when you hear of one lot getting $18M in settlements and loosing all but about $2M.There was probably a small amount of rant in there, but the vein of racism that runs through so many of the threads on these forums (see posts resulting from mine!) just p**ses me off. We tend to boast about having good inter-ethnic relations in NZ, but it is all a bit of a myth; rather like our self delusion about being clean and green. [/RANT #2]

I think you will find that most of them aren't but they are getting heartily sick of some of the goings on. Sometimes it is enough to make anyone a racist and it is dividing the country.

I think you will find that not agreeing with race based rights and privileges doesn't make someone a racist, quite the opposite.

But please, feel free to consider me a racist if you must, But by doing so you prove yourself incapable of holding a worthy opinion.

1280164 2012-06-08 08:10:00 "Slither" used when they mean "Sliver"

Excuse me, there is a difference in those two words. An example : to "slither" means to slide (adjective) A "sliver" means a small part of. (Noun).

Sliding a long way off topic here but prefect managed to remind me of another hated phrase. I'm no Maori, but I am a kiwi and as such I think it's about time people learned there's no such word as Maoris. Maori is both the singular and the plural, it's really not hard even for me and I speak maybe half a dozen words.
