| 1280197 | 2012-06-09 05:32:00 | Words only have whatever power we give them, I usually am only offended by words when they are used to be deliberately offensive. I take no offence at the word Pakeha, and I'm certain no one actually knows it's true meaning for sure. why I think many people find it offensive is because there are some Maori who use it in a very contemptuous manner, I choose to believe they are a minority amongst their people. I can think of no alternative that couldn't be used just as offensively by those people. It's certainly less of a mouthful than something like "Kiwi of european descent " and who want's to get to the state of political correctness that leads to terms like "african american". I think the situation where the mere mention of the colour of a persons skin is offensive is ridiculous. | dugimodo (138) | ||
| 1280198 | 2012-06-09 06:18:00 | I find the term "pakeha" offensive - period. I call myself a "New Zealander" and enter such on any form when asked my nationality. "Moron" would be more accurate. |

| 1280199 | 2012-06-09 09:35:00 | Thats a theory, It has been raised and discussed, it doesn't hold any more water then the claim it refers to pigs. Poor form to put it forward as a fact. Sorry you see it as poor form. I proposed that from the standpoint of having developed an awareness of the issues from being educated in a largely Maori boarding school, working in a Northland community, with some close mates previously seen as "activists". And many of those people being prominently to the fore of news in recent years. Not one of those ever used pakeha as a derogatory term. And all matter-of-factly used "pakeha" as descriptive of being fair skinned. BTW I'm a "Pom" by birth. That term in itself could be construed as racist (if I chose to take offence) ... |

Means nothing to me, Still doesn't warrant stating theory as fact. |

That term in itself could be construed as racist (if I chose to take offence) ...I have heard so many meanings for the term "Pom" over the years, I guess thats a debate in itself as to what it really means. I do know some Brits get pretty fired up over it. |

| 1280203 | 2012-06-09 11:54:00 | If I called a pom a pom, and that pom stated I that by doing so I had offended him, I'd respect his wishes. That would be the end of, Because I'm not a dick. So, take the hint, do likewise, Don't come here and tell us what views we should have to please you. |

I've lived in New Zealand probably twice as long as you have been around, and my views have largely been formed and conditioned by life here. I'm anything but an archetypal Pom. Because I'm not a dick. So whatever happened to "stating theory as fact"? :) |
