| 1304281 | 2012-09-30 22:51:00 | I got the new Iphone5 on Friday, this is my thought after two days... TL,DR; very happy, good upgrade. I have been an Iphone user since the first iphone, but I also own and android tablet and a galaxy-S. my choice of iphone5 over the galaxy SIII was mostly due to the fact that I have about $200 worth of apps in the apple eco system. the galaxy-sIII is a very good looking phone, but I feel it may be too big. as for the choice of carrier, I have been with Vodafone for years, but on firday they had very bad customer service so I moved to telecom. I got the 64GB in black on the $139 plan, costing $299. or more correctly ( 24 months * $139 + $299 = $3635 ) this seen like a lot, but this is my only phone, I don't have a land line. for the upgrade process, I did a full backup with itunes of my old phone, then connected the new phone and did a restore. 20 minutes later I was all done, new phone with all my contacts, apps, bookmarks and music. now the bit you care about, was it worth it? I had the phone4 , not the 4S. so got more of an upgrade. the new 5 is much faster at rendering web pages. the screen is much brighter. the extra 4 icons per screen is nice, but also you get 4 more icons per folder. the camera is a big win, 4MP to 8MP and better low light performance. the new connector is nice, but the cable sucks. on day one and I got that USB cable stuck in the USB port, this is a known issue. the connector is a new design, and can get stuck in some USB ports. my workaround was to connect it to a short extension cable. everyone who has had a play with it has had the same first comments. "OMG, it's so light and thin." as for the maps, yes they are a bit of a train wreck, but that is IOS6, not the new hardware. I hope that Google get a maps application out soon. overall I am very happy, but also happy to admit that I am a bit of a fan boy for apple toys. any questions? |

It would be nice to see some app devs allow you to transfer your purchase cross platform but I doubt that would happen. I find myself the S3 nicer than the S2, it is however rather large. A common complaint. I guess it works for some but not for others. One thing that made me sick when I used my mates S3 was A) Hideous use of TouchWiz B) Horrenous lag with TouchWiz (or perhaps samsung's ROM) I use my S2 with AOKP's JB ROM, smooth as hell just like Android should be. My friends brother bought her a Gnex (wish my siblings were that generous :p) it's actaully larger than I had thought, comes close to S3 sized, the curved screen is really good though and the clean updates from Google are sweet. Anyway back to your iPhone. Upgrade process is always usually easy with apple unless it doesnt work. If it doesn't work you are better leaving your data behind. It is more hassle than its worth :D Faster web rendering is good, although I wonder. Is that an OS thing or hardware? I would have to wonder if apple are limiting older devices to prompt upgrades/make new stuff look better since web rendering should be pretty much the same on the 4 and five using the same software. It would be like saying chome on an i7 rendered stuff.co.nz faster than chrome on an i5. Perhaps i'm wrong but I would have thought that render speeds would be very similar. Better screen is good. One thing manufactueres should never skimp on is screen quality and durability. Hopefully the new generation of phone are stronger than the last! I had too many people ask "can you fix my iphone?" if it was 4/S I denied them, too tricky for an amatuer like me to operate on. 3G/S are quick, fast and easy to repair. Apple's IPS are nice, I don't think they'll ever use SAMOLED. I really like OLED displays. Just looked at getting an new monitor, much nicer than the LCD counterparts. The contrast is great! The extra screen realestate is a big welcome i'd say, strange aspect ratio (I think it looks a bit dicky being tall and thing) but it's a welcome change. Going from bottom to top (navigation wise) will be an issue. WP has solved the large screen navigation thing really well. One thing that I especially love with them is its nice to use, other large screen phones get a bit acrobatic and stretchy. Bummer about the USB cable being dodgy, hopefully apple throw a free replacement at you. It seems strange that so many people are experianceing issues, even on apple hardware (Apple use ball bearing springs to secure USB devices whilst most others use steel tabs) I would have thought at least one engineer would have got the cable stuck during testing and looked into the issue more? People said the same about my Galaxy (even my dad who bought and S3... but didn't like it :p) So thin and light! I guess more people are used to the weight of the iPhone than any others. I do find it funny how a lot of previous "fanboy" arguments resulted in "well other phones feel too light and plasticy. My iPhone had good weight to it" I think less weight is good, less energy to be released into the screen when dropped. I think that's part of the reason my phone has survived so many concrete drops, the light weight is critical. Maps? Bit of a fail but meh. I'd love to rip it out, it's a complete flob but move on shall we? Everyone knows it's a distater. Glad you enjoy it, nothing better than getting a new toy you love! Just wondering, some users experianced chipping around the metal bezel, even fresh from the factory. Has this happened to you? |

| 1304283 | 2012-09-30 23:42:00 | Yeah not a big fan of the standard firmware for the S3. Stock Jellybean / ICS is way nicer. I've been using my One X for a while now, slightly larger than the iPhone 5, but you'd be surprised how tiny it feels after using the Nexus 7. Glad you're liking the iPhone 5 :) Yeah the vendor / eco-system "lock in" is a bit of a PITA... I've got over twice that much on an old iTunes account in apps alone, and that much again in iTunes music I purchased when I had my original iPhone. It happens, just part of life. |

| 1304284 | 2012-10-01 02:30:00 | Thanks for that. I've borrowed an S3 from our Telco for a week to see what I think. Personally I don't like the AMOLED screen, it seems to over represent colours where as the iPhone has a more "natural" colour representation to it. I have heard the One X SLCD is perfered by some for this reason. The widgets are nice but I found myself quickly not using them. - I refer the one stop shop thing with iOS. The phone it's self feels very wide and almost awkard to use with one hand. - Seems all the premium Android handsets are over the 4.5 inch mark, especially if you want decent screen res. (Hard to go back coming from Retina) Battery life didn't seem as good as the 4s. I really wanted to like the S3 as I could pretty much sell the 4S and buy one straight up. The iPhone 5 has its own set of issues which is why I wanted to make the switch. An all digital cable is not a good thing to me, having analog out and charging ability using the internal DAC was brilliant on the old dock. They seem to be scratching and denting very easy with the new alloy body. Sure you can put a cover on it but it takes away from the niceness of the device a bit. I have my 4s naked and thats how I would prefer to have the 5. Bring on Carbon Fiber phones I reckon. Personally I can see reasons for being in both camps, if I had started with android and knew its quirks i'd probably want to stick with that. Can't win /fussy phone owner life. |

Same for the camera, much nicer, dunno why more people don't compare to the One X instead of the SGS3 :( The phone it's self feels very wide and almost awkard to use with one hand. - Seems all the premium Android handsets are over the 4.5 inch mark, especially if you want decent screen res. (Hard to go back coming from Retina) Yeah I *love* how the One X feels by comparison, coz of the ceramic back and things, and IMO it's overall just *nicer*. Battery life didn't seem as good as the 4s. Yeah in my experience the iPhone has marignally better battery life, usually due to the screen size I've found. During a day of solid use, that seems to make quite a difference. Unsure about the iPhone 5 though. Personally I can see reasons for being in both camps, if I had started with android and knew its quirks i'd probably want to stick with that. Can't win /fussy phone owner life. :D :D :D |

| 1304286 | 2012-10-01 03:59:00 | I for the life of me will never understand why the galaxy appears to be the only phone on the market that can be compared to the iPhone. Its rather annoying. Plenty of top end phones around as chill said. | The Error Guy (14052) | ||
| 1304287 | 2012-10-01 04:09:00 | Seems to have the biggest following with the tweekers. To be honest that probably doesn't matter to me, its half business tool half toy. The business tool part would keep it un rooted. | Alex B (15479) | ||
| 1304288 | 2012-10-01 05:03:00 | Chill, I think why most will compare to the galaxy S3 is due to four reasons. 1, the Galaxy S2 was such a success and was *the* top android phone, so people will look to its successor naturally. 2, the Galaxy S3 has a removable battery and a SD card slot, which has been recognised as a android *win* point, while the One X doesn't have either of those. 3, the Galaxy S3 is generally recognised to have better battery life to the One X. So, although the One X has a better camera, build quality, and screen, I'd say the Galaxy S3 is still the top android phone. Just to me, it seems the S3 tries to be the best android, while the One X tries to offer the 'iPhone experience' while running android. So, in a shootout between androids, the S3 wins (seems to anyway), which leads to it being the 'top android'. As such it is compared against the iPhone, instead of the One X which arguably offers more of an iPhone like experience in the hand, so should be compared to the iPhone even if it is not the 'top android' Just my :2cents: OP, I'm glad you like your new toy ;) |

| 1304289 | 2012-10-01 09:19:00 | I had a quick play on one today. Very light and thin, didn't get the chance to bounce test though. One thing that pissed me off was the screen sensitivity, seemed to jump all over the place. Felt kinda like a really rubbish mouse with the cursor acceleration cranked right up. Maybe my HTC Sensation is just slow? | hueybot3000 (3646) | ||

Maybe my HTC Sensation is just slow? Nope that's the all famous samsung (or rather android) "lag". A friend of mine bought an S3 and I wanted to have a look, I used touchwiz on my S1 but never on my S2 and I wanted to see if they had finally improved it (they haven't it's god awful). Other than looking bad (and it's not that bad until you compare with stock ICS or JB... then you notice the difference) It is REALLY laggy, scrolling through contacts/messages was foul. Not sure if its touchwiz causing the problem or very bad ROM programming from Samsung. Either way she wanted me to put a custom ROM on, didn't even have to ask her if she wanted it fixed :D |
