54700 2002-06-17 00:16:00 I am about to recieve a computer and I am going to put linux on it. How hard would it be to network 2 computers together in linux? One is using RedHat 7.1 and the other one will be using OpenLinux 1.3.

54701 2002-06-18 05:29:00 In two words, 'very easy'.

If you have network cards in both, 'exceptionally easy'. (Unless the cards are identified in the bootup as 'ne', when there could be some problems).

The Network-HOWTO will tell you everything you need.

I suppose you have twisted pair ('Cat 5' 'RJ45'), so you need a hub or a 'crossover cable).

Give each machine an IP address (in the private ranges) and a name in your 'domain'. Try the 'hostname' command ...
then edit the /etc/hosts files
on both machines to look like:

127.0.0.1 loopback
10.0.0.10 machine1 machine1.simon.net
10.0.0.20 machine2 machine2.simon.net

Then you should be able to (from machine1) 'ping machine2' , 'ping machine1'.

If they don't work, you might need to enable some networking services in the inetd stuff.
But TCP/IP is easier than bloody modems ;-) .

54702 2002-06-18 10:39:00 I got the computer today and because it already had windows on it, I decided to just try the networking hardware in it by creating a network. I created the network in windows and they could see themselves but they couldn't see eachother. Why?
