54666 2002-06-16 12:45:00 I've been having problems with my CD-ROM over the past week or so (not sure of the model - seems pretty generic). At first, every so often my PC would freeze up to the point where I had to reset - looking for a pattern, I noticed that this would happen every time the CD-ROM was accessed in any way, inclusing save as boxes or any program which had a directory listing and would, I assume, access the CD-ROM so it could display its title. I ruled out mechanical issues with the CD-ROM, because every once in a while it works fine, allowing me to read/burn as much as I like, until it freezes the computer again. Then sometimes, but not always, 'secondary IDE controller (dual fifo)' in device manager would be yellow-exclamation-marked after startup, and there would be no CD-ROM in 'my computer'. It's the primary drive on the secondary IDE channel. I have its IDE cable unplugged now, as the PC won't work with it plugged in.

I have not installed any new software or hardware except for my netMD walkman (USB) about a week before it started, but I didn't think USB devices could cause any kind of conflict (IRQs? etc.). And I don't really want to uninstall it to see, because the drivers are on CD-ROM and I wouldn't be able to reinstall it if it turned out not to be the problem. Any ideas on what the problem is, or how I could find out? Thanks.

54667 2002-06-17 00:34:00 Sounds to me like the cd rom died, if you were considering getting a CDRW, nows the time to put it in.
Can you get your claws on another CDR to put in the slot, just to see if that works?
