54946 2002-06-18 05:59:00 This problem is on a friends computer, recently bought, with a Win98SE clean instal, and a recovery partition.

It is most probable that the Windows Logon Box at first start up was cancelled with the escape key by guys at the shop, thus there is no password file, hence the greyed out save password box in Dial Up Networking.

Ive tried most of the usual remedies, to try and get a logon box back, and be able to enter a null password and hopefully make a password file, including:

disabling/enabling autologon in the registry;

ensuring Microsoft Client for Windows is installed;

enabling 'Users can customize their preferences..' in Passwords User Profiles;

removing DUN, then re-installing;

So I tried making a new User Profile. That works, and the DUN save password box is not greyed out. Fine. But how do I now get Windows to boot direct into this new profile instead of the default no-name one.

Tweakui 'should' do it via the logon tab, but it doesnt.

Even adding Microsoft Family Logon in the Networking dialogue maybe would have brought up a list at logon to chose from, but it didnt.

Anyone any further ideas? Have I missed something incredibly simple?

There is a small possibility that some preferences have been saved when you remove DUN. Why not reinstall from a different CD, such as your own.

Other than that, perhaps re-installing the entire OS in the hope that it was a misconfiguration by the chaps in the shop... Long shot...

Have you tried setting up a new (same) account withh the Internet Connection Wizard and then delete the old one? Seem to remember it takes you through the process of setting up DUN. Perhaps this would reconfigure/repair DUN from scratch (?)

Wild guess

54949 2002-06-18 09:38:00 Had a similar problem moons ago myself.
I think I got over it by deleting all .pwl files.(I think there was only 2)(used find facility to locate them)

Windows was gratious enough to revert to normal and allow you to start passwords from scratch.

Cheers

54951 2002-06-18 09:53:00 Don't know if this will be of any help but moons ago when I had a similar problem I got over it by deleting the .pwl files. (only 2 as I recall)
Windows was gratious enough to return to normal and allow me to install new paswords from scrarch.
Just used the find facility to locate the .pwl files.

54953 2002-06-18 11:24:00 All Windows versions have had save password problems and even Win XP forgets the saved password at times.

This info might help.

Problem 1: You have checked the 'Save password' box, but DUN does not remember it from one session to the next.
1. Delete your username.pwl file in the Windows folder.

2. Log off or Restart Windows.

3. Leave the password field blank and click on OK when prompted for a password in the 'Enter Windows Password' box.

4. Leave both password fields blank in the 'Set Windows Password' box and click on OK.

5. Double-Click your ISP's icon.

6. Enter your username and/or password if missing in the 'Connect to' dialog box.

7. Check the 'Save Password' box.

8. Click the 'connect' button.

NOTE: You must connect successfully to your ISP once before your password will be saved for future sessions .

Problem 2: You can't save the password because the 'Save password' check box is 'grayed out.'
See if Client for Microsoft Network is listed as one of the installed components in the Configuration tab of Control Panel/Network. If it is not listed you must install it using the following steps:

1. Click the ADD button

2. Highlight Client and click on Add.

3. Highlight Microsoft in the left pane and Client for Microsoft Networks in the right pane.

4. Click on OK.

If the above four steps do not correct the problem, browse to the following registry key using regedit: (WARNING: Backup the registry before proceeding!)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Network\Real Mode Net

If a value named 'AutoLogon' exists:

1. Highlight it using your mouse.

2. Then press the delete key on your keyboard.

3. Exit regedit.

4. Restart Windows.
