As mentioned this problem arises because no .pwl password file is made if the logon box at first run of Win9x after instal is incorrectly cancelled.

Many of the remedies actually assume a .pwl file, whether corrupt or not, actually exists.

A new user profile can be made which does enable the password to be saved, but booting into windows brings up the original default no-name, no password file, user.

Its a hassle having to then log off and then on again as the new profile.

I wasnt able to get a logon box back to enable a password file to be made for the default original 'profile', many, many remedies were applied unsuccessfully.

There are several programs free and shareware floating around on the web that claim to cure this problem, so I tried a free one, netlogon.exe from:

What this did was to copy 2 (unknown) files to the system directory.
These files brought up the logon box, and when completed it was found that a new user profile had been made.

When starting windows a netlogon box then appears which if 'OK' is clicked instantly gives the new user profile, which has a functioning Save Password box.

This is much more convenient than having to keep typing in a password every time a dial up is made.
