2002-06-21 03:35:00 | I had to uninstall zonealarm recently and reinstall it. It then said it detected my old settings. How? Does an uninstall still leave traces in the registry?

2002-06-21 03:46:00 | Yes Some Programs do. There are programs that can watch an installation and then when you unistall a program it will delete any registry entries that, that program created. Please note that some programs do remove registries they create. :)

2002-06-21 04:02:00 | How comfortable are you with going into your registry?? to get into your registry go to run; and type regedit when in there go to local machine; software; Scroll down the list and remove any keys of programs that you KNOW you have uninstalled. A rule of thumb! Never remove something if you are unsure, or don't know what it is or goes to. Finally Make sure you back up your registry first!!

2002-06-21 06:00:00 | there are programs which can clean out left over entries such has regcleaner (http://www.jv16.org/) but programs often leave files behind, in your case the zonealarm config file. zonalarm have a removal guide on their site.

2002-06-21 06:17:00 | You will probably find that it was not to do with the registry. But to do with a small text file that will be left behind in the program directory. These are supposed to *help* you

2002-06-23 01:44:00 | I use Fix-It great program easy to use and more powerful than norton for registry cleanup. RegCleaner is good as well but never hit the reset hardware option , | kiwibeat (304) | |

For the registry there are many different tools you can use from microsofts regclean to Iolo System Mechanic. System Meachanic is available as a 30 day trial and appears to be quite a handy little program, You can grab the trial from here www.iolo.com As for the folders left behind just browse through from My Computer and then your main drive and finally program files and have a clean out in there too. There will still be traces tucked away in some remote corner which is how most trial versions detect that you've used the trial before but this will remove most of the general garbage left behind. | dipstick01 (445) | ||
