55646 2002-06-21 01:47:00 Sounds like you have a disk in the floppy drive. Remove it and hit a key (or try to boot again) :) Shroeder (492)
55647 2002-06-21 02:12:00 could also be dead hardrive.

what info do you get on screen? does the bios reconise the hardrive?

i've had a case of a pc battery gone flat causeing the bios to lose the hardrive settings and hence not boot.

55648 2002-06-21 02:56:00 Wrong - there are only two things which cause this error message.

Either there is a non-bootable floppy disk in the drive (and the machine is set to boot from the A drive first), or

The system files are missing or corrupt.
Solution = boot from a startup disk of the same version of Windows or Dos which is installed and at the A:\> type sys c: and press enter. Remove the floppy disk and restart the computer.

The error message is covered in all A+ courses as well as documented at the MSkb

55649 2002-06-21 10:08:00 Not Wrong - this message CAN come from a hard disk that has not been recognised properly. Usually because the drive is starting to fail ('sticking' and not starting up quickly enough). wuppo (41)
55650 2002-06-21 10:34:00 Hi Chilling_Silence (may I call you Chill?)

When the computer is started, the boot routine polls the floppy disk (or the 'A drive') for a valid boot disk.
If it can't find a bootable disk then the system reads the boot sector from the first physical hard drive.

The partition table on the hard drive is examined for a partition with a boot indicator.
If no partitions are marked as bootable, then the system executes an interrupt 18H, which transfers control to ROM Basic.

Under these conditions, the computer displays the message:

Non-System disk or disk error
replace and strike any key when ready

If this happens when there is a bootable disk in the floppy drive (usually A), make sure that the boot sequence is set
to drive A and then the first hardrive partition (usually C) in the computer's BIOS/CMOS setting.

You can try the suggestion of Merlins' and also check you have an active partition on the first hardrive (c?)

Cheers, Babe.
