56429 2002-06-22 08:54:00 Just been installing Win95c on a Pentium 120, with all the updates I can find, IE, DUN, Winsock etc. Must say I haven't had first-hand experience of this version before, but it looks good, and with the active desktop options, single click etc, it looks a lot like Win98.

To enhance it even further the following utilities were lifted from Win98 and Win ME, they've been described before, but are worth repeating on the new Press F1.

Scanreg:

From a Win98 machine copy:

scanregw.exe from C:\WINDOWS

scanreg.ini from C:\WINDOWS

scanreg.exe from C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND

and put them in the corresponding Win95 folders.
In C:\WINDOWS\StartMenu\Programs\StartUp, make a short cut to scanregw.exe with the command:

C:\WINDOWS\scanreg.exe /autorun in the Target box.

Now Win95 will backup the registry each day, and from DOS, scanreg.exe can be run with the options; /fix /opt /restore etc. just like Win98.

Disk CleanUp Utility:

Copy the program cleanmgr.exe from Win98 C:\WINDOWS, and put it into Win95 with a handy shortcut somewhere.
Now you can clean dead wood from your hard drive just as in Win98.

Defrag:

Speed up defragmenting by using defrag.exe from Win ME. This can be downloaded from: www.vfw6110.org or taken from a WIN ME machine.

Copy it into C:\WINDOWS, either overwriting the existing version, or re-name the old version, just in case.

Oh, BTW, glad to see the new Press F1 up and running, just hope newbies can cope with the extra details and not be put off.

56431 2002-06-22 09:47:00 Good stuff Terry, thanks.

I have a Toshiba Libretto 50CT sub-notebook running W95 and had been thinking of transplanting some W98 utilities.

Now I will!

Cheers

Do you know the biggest problem with the Libretto?

It is so darned small (size of a VHS video cassette) that if you put it down you can never find the damned thing again.

56432 2002-06-22 10:01:00 Thanks Terry, that should go on the FAQ page. Put a link to your post in there so they know about it. :-)

Trev, is that a typo: defragged a 20 gig drive in 30 seconds?? I don't believe that.

Billy, get one of those key finder things that beeb or something when you whistle for them, if you can still buy them, and attach it to your little PC. Shouldn't lose it then!

56433 2002-06-22 11:17:00 Susan, it is entirely possible to defrag a 20gig drive in 30 seconds. Depending on how much datais on there.

Ofcourse I wouldn't really call it a *defrag* as when you run a defrag after just doing a defrag, it ain't really a defrag. ;)

56434 2002-06-23 02:50:00 This may interest you Billy.

Here's another good Win98 utility that can be moved over to Win95, System File Checker.

Here's how to do it:

From c:\windows\system in Win98, copy sfc.exe and sfcdll.dll to the same folder in Win95.

Run sfc.exe and it will say you are missing a default sfc log file and it offers to restore it. Put a Win98 CD in the CDROM drive and accept the offer, the file is in the Win98 folder on the disk.

System file checker will now run as for Win98, excellent for detecting corrupted system files, or changed system files, eg an updated file, or a file that has been overwritten by an older version etc.

56436 2002-06-23 05:34:00 I downloaded what I think is the Win ME defragger but it still takes 35-45 minutes to defrag my 6 gig hard drive if I haven't done it for a couple of weeks. Maybe it's cos my machine's slow - Pent 2 266mHZ. Susan B (19)

When the drive is not that fragged that is pretty normal.

But if you were to go a year of installing and uninstalling stuff and generally messing around with data on the drive. You'd find taht when you did do the defrag it would take a lot longer.
