56356 2002-06-22 04:26:00 Hi,
I have installed Windows 98 onto an IBM machine (Pentium II) which uses an IBM monitor (G54, whatever that means) and the display driver reads as IBM 6546 on S3 in Trio64V + compatible. Alas, it only goes to 16 colours on 640 x 480.

Troubleshooting doesn't seem to want to change the driver ... and I am at a loss ... Any suggestions would be thankfully received

Cheers
Bill

56357 2002-06-22 04:54:00 Bill, from your post it sounds like its the monitor driver you are trying to change?
This will not affect your display, so you need to try the video driver.

If it is indeed a Trio64V, I think these had a maximum of 1 MB of video ram, now my maths for your 16 colour (4 bit) gives 640x480x4=1,228,800 or a tad over 1 MB

Perhaps thats all you will get? The Trio64V is getting on a bit npw. Maybe however the PC actually has a different adaptor, if so you need to find out and try a driver for it. You don't give much of a clue as to model number of PC, a simple search engine enquiry would reveal what it should have, if you can advise us of the model of the PC

56358 2002-06-22 06:47:00 I think the maths is: 640 * 480 * 4/8 ( to get bytes) = 153.6K

If your only selection is 640 x 480, either the video driver is corrupt, or the installed monitor type is indicating the monitor is not capable of greated than 640 x 480.

Try changin the monitor type to Default SVGA. If that doesn't fix the problem, re-install the Trio driver.

56359 2002-06-22 06:50:00 Oops, I got my bits and bytes mixed!

Still doubt that a PII would have a card so old though, probably not being detected properly?

56360 2002-06-22 08:22:00 the s3 could well be the 4meg ver(sorry i'm not at home so i don't have the info infront of me). go download the correct driver for the video card. s3 allso have a prog that can id exactly what chip the card has.

personal i would ditch the card and get something decent. the s3 trio's are one of the few cards i know that actually slow down a system.
