internet explorer 5.5

i currently have the option to display internet explorer on my desktop enabled but it doesn't display it. i have tried using tweak iu to get it to show up on my desktop without success. in tweak ui, under the desktop section it shows 3 internet explorer icons. when i enable them none of them opperate properly. can some please help me to get the proper internet explorer icon to be displayed on my desktop (not just a shortcut).

for ages now when my computer has finished loading, the c drive window appears. i can't find anything in win.ini or the registry that i think would cause this. nobody from pressf1 has been able to solve this problem for me, after having posted a message about this around 5 times. PLEASE HELP ME! IF YOU SOLVE THIS YOU WILL GET THE TITLE OF SMARTEST PRESSF1ER! :D

56277 2002-06-22 05:24:00 Craig, the problem of windows explorer opening on boot-up has been covered on this form reasonably recently, and more than once. I cannot remember the details but would be worth searching the form. From memory its to do with a space appearing in the command line in the explorer shortcut, after the parameters...

I have read your post several times and admit I can't figure out exactly what you mean regarding IE apart from you cannot get the icon for IE to reside on your desktop.

You will need to detail what version of windows and IE you are running as any assitance will likely be highly version dependant

56278 2002-06-22 05:47:00 Hi Craig,
For the second of your reported problems Please confirm that you have checked Win.ini for the 2 conditions described in Q145764 on the MS knowledge base. The symptoms are described thus:-

"Each time you start Windows 95, one or more instance of Windows Explorer starts, displaying the root folder of drive C.

This may occur even though there are no instances of Windows Explorer open when you shut down Windows 95."

56279 2002-06-22 06:07:00 here is a cut and past of the top of my win.ini file, where the run and load sections are:

[windows]
load=
run=
NullPort=None
device=EPSON Stylus COLOR 400,EPS400,LPT1:

what exactly needs changing?

56280 2002-06-22 06:23:00 Peter, Craig posted his win.ini and regedit file info a couple of days ago here:

This problem is driving everyone nuts! If it were me I would be thinking of a reformat and reinstall.

56281 2002-06-22 06:30:00 Craig, absolutely nothing, but now I know that my suggestion has been received. During the last few weeks many posts fell off the planet and since I got no acknowledgement of the three times I posted, I had to assume that they had not arrived.
Now I can go away and think of some other cause.

56282 2002-06-22 08:39:00 As far as Internet Explorer is concerned, why not make a new shortcut? Right click the desktop; New; Shortcut; ...

I run Win 98 and have located the IE file here:
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

56283 2002-06-22 08:50:00 I've just thought of something regarding the IE icon: try going to Tools, Options, Advanced and scroll down and see if the "Show Internet Explorer on the desktop" is ticked. Susan B (19)
56284 2002-06-22 08:57:00 thanks suzan, but as i said originally, the 'display internet explorer on desktop' option is ticked, but doesn't have any effect. this is the reason i posted about this. i could just create a shortcut but the fact is, something must be wrong or that option would work. 56285 2002-06-22 09:05:00 For your IE problem.... the first thing you need to do is delete/remove the Tweak UI program you will also have to edit the registry and remove the reference to Tweak UI .

2nd you will have to uninstall IE (I assume you're using IE6... yes I know this seems a bit tedious but I had the same trouble and this is what I did to fix the problem)

Once you've reverted back to and older version of IE (IE 5.5 or something) install IE 6 a full install select all options. Once you've done that re-install Tweak UI and you should be good to go.
