55970 2002-06-21 14:54:00 I am going round and round in circles here, with something that should be really, really simple!

How do I safely delete temporary files?

Also, if I go: Start > Run > C:\_RESTORE\TEMP\ can I delete the entire folder, and are all temp files on computer (internet and mail included) stored in here.

Regards, BALDY

55971 2002-06-21 20:28:00 To delete files in the _RESTORE folder you will need to disable RESTORE to allow the system to purge these files. To do this, Right click on My Computer > select Properties > Performance > File System > Trouble Shooting. Check the Disable System Restore box and OK out of there. Restart computer. All RESTORE points will be gone as well as all the files. To re-enable then simply follow instructions above and uncheck Disable System Restore.

The other TEMP files will be in the Windows Explorer folder. Navigate to C: > WINDOWS > TEMP and or Temporary Internet Files. You can delete files from there. IF the file you want is specific to a Program then navigate to Program Files and locate the Program you want and see if they have a TEMP folder there.

Good Luck

ps I am doing this from work and memory so apologies if my instructions are a little out. If this is the case then go to Symantec (http://www.symantec.com) and follow Service & Support links.

55973 2002-06-21 21:30:00 HI,
Once you have disabled RESTORE and restarted computer then ALL restore files will be deleted. To check go into Windows Explorer and check in the RESTORE folder. They should be all gone. Let me know.

55975 2002-06-21 23:47:00 The best way to delete all temp files is to go to command promp by pressing F8 on PC restart until you get C:\
then go \WINDOWS\SMARTDRV (this makes it work faster)
Then CD WINDOWS
then DELTREE/Y TEMP (Enter) There is a space after the Y
This will delete all temp files
Ctrl Alt Delete to restart
