2002-06-24 19:05:00 | Hi Chris, I can see that you have given this lot's of thought and that all your points are valid. There has been a monopoly in this country for a long time, no one is going to argue with you there. I guess that I only wanted to point out that everywhere the issue of dialup is raised you can't seem to resist expressing how lucky you are that you are on cable. I can see that you are very passionate about it and that is fantastic. I was only trying to say that not everyone wants , needs or can afford cable. Obviously there are many more who would want cable but as it is only available in certain areas then they must feel disadvantaged as they must use the only telco there and therefore are deprived of choice. I think that you are somewhat right I may well be jealous of your high speed connection and the apparant hassle free experience that you enjoy with Telstra. (www.telstraexposed.com) I think I am jealous in the same way that I am jealous of anyone who drives by in an HSV Senator, or those who have luxurious beach house. I like many others make do with what I have and do not really need anyone to flaunt their good fortune in front of me. I don't really want to get into an ongoing debate with you as I have only been involved with computers for nearly 1 year and with your vast experience and expertise in this area would surely leave me without answers. I must say that what does strike me is your passion to strike out against monopolistic (australia.internet.com) companies (ie Telecom) and I support you as surely if it wasn't for Saturn then Clear and now Telstra Clear (http://www.ihatetelstra.com) we would still be paying exhorbinant prices with very little we could do about it, so I say bring Telstra here as well so I can get better services, hear hear.

2002-06-24 20:02:00 | I think you have provided me with some good reading for when i wake up later this morning.. Thankyou. Although i haven't read it, i assume that there will be insite to what Telstra have done in OZ where they have similar monopolistic dominance over the telecomunications market as our monster. Don't get me wrong here, i don't hate all big companys, i just know that they will produce a damn fine carrot for us, but the aim is make $$, so what kind of service we get from the carrot may not be quite what we expect. I certainly dont want to see a return to Govt controlled telcos' where the level of stupidity was barely able to produce a carrot in the first place, let alone a good one!

2002-06-25 05:01:00 | Yes, more competition, better prices (we hope) this sounds like more competition to Telstra as they have to put new 'lines/cable' into houses as opposed to Telecom who already have lines there (albeit old ones) and the power companies already have access. This story deserves a fresh posting, hopefully someone in the know may spill the beans when?, where it will start?, is there a trial group? who is the isp?, cost? etc. | sam m (517) | |
2002-06-25 06:20:00 | Hi everyone There have been some good points on this subject which I have put it down to 2 things. 1 - Telecoms phone lines. 2. The ISP providers. Dial up modems are going to be around for some time yet, as nearly everyone I know who has a computer has one. If you only surf, download the odd program or the odd E-Mail, dialup should be sufficiant The point is, what can the average person do about it - Change ISPs till we get a reasonable service - then if its our phone lines - tough - we just have to put up with it. Can't afford Cable etc - cost does'nt warrant it Laurie

2002-06-25 06:59:00 | Well for what it's worth In in South Auckland area and up until a month ago regularly tuned in at 47 - 49 bps. Today I'm lucky if I get 35 bps! Telecom are a useless bunch when it comes to assistance, can't even tell me when JetStream will be available in the area! | TEEBEE (563) | |
2002-06-25 07:26:00 | sounds like you have had the upgrade, Telecon are putting fibre to wee boxes that then feed the local lines... All very sensable, one small catch max dial up speed is just over 33k, there is a place on the telecon page where you can see if you can now get jetscream. I would say you could as this "upgrade" insures that Jetscream is supported try here (www.telecom.co.nz) the page is produced dynamicly, so i cant garentee the link will work | Chris Wilson (431) | |
2002-06-25 08:19:00 | Okay, I think we all get the point in this prolonged discussion - Dialup service "STINKS", so is there anyone who is Pleased with their Dialup connection (BE HONEST HERE) & who is their ISP. Don't be shy now | Laurie (485) | |
2002-06-25 08:41:00 | the question was asked here (pressf1.co.nz) one time when i wanted to see if anyone was actually happy heres the results would be interesting to see what the results would be now, 1½ months later BTW, dialup access in Cobden, Greymouth though SNAP (www.snap.net.nz) is great!
