56298 2002-06-22 07:08:00 Using an HP here, PIII 667. Used standard elcheapo RAM, all you need to do is look at your mobo specs, then check the specs of the computer as mobo maker says 512 MB ram ok, but computer says 256 Mb. (HP version of BIOS). So don't try putting 256Mb sticks in.

Lets face it apart from minor variations caused by BIOS the computer is just a mobo made by ASUS, ram y god know who and peripherals such as CD writer branded HP and made by TEAC, HDD by Quantum.

Reliability has been excellent, still running an old HP 266 Celeron that hasn't missed a beat in years.

Despite what I have heard, support via web has been great in my case

56299 2002-06-22 07:28:00 You missed Harvey Normans and Stationary Warehouse Nathan. The staff at DSE in Dunedin are usually OK. (The ones at Kerikeri DSE in Northland are excellent, and know much more than I do). Noel Leem... B&B's, Power Store and Stat Ware-whare couldn't tell their heads from their... if you know what I mean. Harvey Normans, ahve a godd selection including Pocket PC's and Macs, but I don't know how good their knowledge is.

Their is of course good ole PC Co., but I'd be surprised if they said something like that, tarnished though their reputation is.

56300 2002-06-22 07:37:00 Thats a great story Baldy!

Do people really buy computers like that,it,s like the blind leading the blind.
With Hp computers upgrade is not and option [ and I,m not just talking
ram ] the bios,s are usually the biggest limiting factor because there
proprietary ,if they don,t provide an update for a new cpu then you can,t upgrade and of course they don,t update them cause they want to sell a new comp.
Educating people is the key here folks!

The shop must have been Noel Leeming or Computer City.

56301 2002-06-22 08:16:00 I agree that its just not worth upgrading HP .

I am on my 11th PC now, and not once in that time has it ever been worth upgrading (nice to do perhaps, but not worth it)

13 computers may seem a lot but I started in 1980 . . . .

Basically when they are not able to perform the neccessary tasks it has always been cheaper for me to just start again .

Exclude monitors, they recycle OK as do some peripherals .

That is what the Compaq / HP market has always been in my mind, if you wanted unlimited flexibility then you built it yourself .

Pity the advertising doesnt support this fundamental view?

56302 2002-06-22 08:31:00 Hey not every store has complete idiots mind you. I use to work at Warehouse Stationary as the "Computer Specialist" and yes i do know what im talking about lol, as im also a Massey IT Grad as well. Yeah but i agree that most retail stores dont know jack, and im shock by the amount of BS that fella was pulling off. If it was me selling them the stuff i'll be honest with em straight up (that was my sales pitch funnily enough ~~)

But note i USE to work as one *jots this detail so he wont get flamed as a money hungry sales who doesnt know squat* :D

56303 2002-06-22 08:33:00 lol baldy :)

bullshit salespeople for ya. leave it to the techs to clean up the mess ;-)

hp/compaq aren't to bad to buy provided you know what you are getting. you can use a lot of standard parts but there are some catches. bios being very limited on adjustment.
half height cases(or width) which means standard size cards will not fit unless you buy a new case. the existing half height cards will not fit standard cases properly.
small psu and psu's that are made for that motherboard (i'm looking for one at the mo, standard psu will not work on it as it requires special/extra connectors or a new motherboard. need an hp at psu that has an atx stye power on, on an extra lead)
limited bios upgrades, even when the motherboard are brand name eg asus. for eg asus don't make bios upgrades for their oem motherboards.

HOWEVER,,, listen up PCcompany, i have yet to see a bad thermal setup on an hp/compaq.

56304 2002-06-22 08:37:00 I just remembered an old joke I saw somewhere:

Q: What's the difference between a used car salesman and a computer salesman?

A: The used car salesman knows when he's lying.

56306 2002-06-22 08:47:00 Baldy,
I hope you relate this sad story to the management of the shop concerned. No one likes getting dorked, and I'm sure the information would be appreciated.

56307 2002-06-22 08:58:00 Reminds me of the time Chis Keall did a story posing as a newbie and went around a bunch of chains trying to buy a PC. I think it was in Farmers (do they sell PCs anymore?) where the assistant told him that the speed of the CPU would soon be irrelevant because Intel had produced a chip that worked at the speed of light (or something to that effect).
