56396 2002-06-22 08:23:00 That looks a pretty good deal Mark!

The only thing I would change is the video card ,especially if your into gaming,I would upgrade it to a Geforce 4 Ti 4200 this is a up to date card,
Don,t bother with a Geforce 4 440mx as these cards are nothing more than a Geforce 2 with ddr ram.

Also make sure it is not an OEM pc [ they have built it themselves from
branded parts] and they can supply the OEM cd,s for the software and
not restore disks.

Custom built pc,s are always better.

56397 2002-06-22 08:34:00 Yep - Agree this looks pretty good but wonder what warrantee is being offered? Curly (487)
56398 2002-06-22 08:38:00 CHECK what brand parts are used. i had a look at a pc for a mate and found that the motherboard that they were useing was a noname brand(ie no support for it and no idea on how good/bad it was) which explains why it was so cheap. tweak'e (174)
56399 2002-06-22 09:30:00 Thanks guys,
Will check the parts out. I'm afraid Geforce 4 is a bit out of my price range. It's a standard 12 month warranty, although I think the monitor may be 3 years through the manufacture.
Will also remember to check if the original OEM CD's are supplied.

tech_mister what you say regarding the GF4 MX440 being just a GF2 with ddr ram is wrong. There is alot that it has that is better.

The MX440 can even beat a GF3 Ti200 in some benchmarks.
It has hardware DVD decoding (which is something that the GF4 Ti4200 doesn't)

In general it is a much better card. Depending on which GF2 ofcourse.

56401 2002-06-22 12:43:00 Sorry,JM I have probably over simplified it a bit,
but the GF4 MX440 does not really have a GF4 chip ,the issue is very complicated and confusing.
Read this review www.beyond3d.com
it explains it better than me :)

56403 2002-07-22 03:09:00 Drop the Xp software and scanner ask for a larger monitor plus more ram and better graphics card and put Win 98 or 2000 on it . kiwibeat (304)
56404 2002-07-22 05:04:00 Jesus, it never fails to amaze me that the most IMPORTANT part of a computer is never mentioned... the MOTHERBOARD!!! What is it? How upgradeable is it? What does it support, etc?

Few other questions to think about...

Is your 17 inch monitor flat or curved?

What type of writer are you getting with it?

Is it pc2700 ram or older pc2100?

Does your hard drive support ATA 133? Does your motherboard support RAID??

Definitely agree to drop XP Home, and scanner. But would also try it on with Norton... you don't need it... You can download free anti-virus software, so that might drop the price a bit...

Anyway, take these parts INCLUDING the motherboard specs and go to another computer store. I'd say get at least three quotes and screw them down for all you can.

C-Tech and OEM in Manukau are good for that sort of thing... happy hunting!

Lo.
