56369 2002-06-22 07:12:00 The Girl bought herself a microphone at the Warehouse Stationery the other day but we can't seem to be able to make it work in MSN.

She can record and play back her silly noises in sound recorder but her friends can't hear a squeak out of her when she tries to chat with them. She can hear them OK.

Anyone got any ideas?

Running Win 98, IE 5.5 with latest patches, almost-latest MSN version, etc etc etc.

56370 2002-06-22 07:31:00 Susan, this is not a problem. It is designed this way, to FCC requirements that women should not be heard unless its "dinner is ready" or some other allowable statements not designed for a family forum.

If you need a microphone that works perhaps you should have asked for a mens microphone...

I hope this has assisted you in the true manner of this forum (gee I miss the lounge)

Also check the volume control settings and try all of the options, wave, line etc.

Well if it works in sound recorder I would have thought the settings were pretty right for MSN . Maybe I should just tell her to take it back to the Warehouse for a refund .

> gee I miss the lounge

Me too, badly!

Oh, BTW . Remember how you said it was a woman's fault that men are colour blind? Well, I was thinking about that (I think slow sometimes) and you'd be interested to know that the male carries the chromosome that determines a child's sex . Therefore a colourblind man passes on the faulty gene to his daughters who then pass it on to their sons . If a man didn't have daughters in the first place then the faulty gene would just disappear, wouldn't it?

So you see it's not actually a woman's fault after all, is it? :D

56372 2002-06-22 08:44:00 I suppose you have to say a man has to be there in the fist place . . . no wait theres IVF!! but then he has been around somewhere . . .

Couln't resist that comment about the mic .

Dont assume anything re the sound settings, I have some applications using the same device that swap from Line to Wav, application dependant .

Try them all, as some may pass the mic signal internally to wave, or line etc . They are all programmable . There are 9 sources all told on my PC being:
Volume
Wave
Wavetable
Phone
Mic
Line
CD
Video
Aux

They all are mutable

Got out of Hobbitton before bad weather descended (though Air NZ did their best and delayed my flight an hour) but it was a 16 hour day and I was tired .

Comes with being old . . .

56373 2002-06-22 09:07:00 I've looked everywhere I can think of but can't see anything else I can twiddle with . :-(

If I double-click on the sound icon on the taskbar and get the Volume Control box all that is in there are Volume Control, Wave, CD Audio, Line In and MIDI . None of them are muted .

It's frustrating because The Girl says her friends just plug theirs in and away they go . But then, they don't have good ol' Win98 .

> Couln't resist that comment about the mic .

If you did, you would have to be demoted in my College ;-)

56374 2002-06-22 09:18:00 On the volume control box should be a menu item "Options"

Select that and enable each option, you can only see the default ones unless you do.

I am assuming that is the case in W98, don't have such a fossilised operating system here....

Why are you not watching the Rugby..shame on you.
Did you know if you listen to it on AM and watch it on satellite, you hear it 3 seconds before you see it.

Great for "predicting" the outcome

56375 2002-06-22 09:41:00 You beauty! The microphone box in there wasn't checked! :x

I'm sure it will work now but won't know until tomorrow since The Girl is watching a video and won't come and test it. And I'm not going to chat with her mates and boyfriends...

Oh it's so nice having my own godfather to sort me out when I get stuck. :-)

> Why are you not watching the Rugby

Bugger the rugby, I'll see the best bits on the news tomorrow night! :D

Got my headphones on listening to music so they can watch their video in peace. And I can soon find out the score somewhere on here before they show the finish on our TV hehe. ;-)

56376 2002-06-22 10:21:00 Hi Susan B. I am interested to find out how you get on with trying the talk side of MSN.Have had trouble getting mine to work too.Last time my sister claimed she heard me ok,but all I heard were the chipmunks. So I've given up in disgust.Win.ME. Regards.Neil McC. Neil McC (178)
56377 2002-06-22 11:13:00 Well why don't you just test it yourself.

I don't see how anyone could have a hotmail account, have msn installed. But not use msn messenger to check your hotmail.

56378 2002-06-22 11:21:00 JM: I only use Hotmail as my spam account and don't use MSN myself much .

I check my Hotmail emails in Outlook Express and hardly ever go to the Hotmail site .
