| 55889 | 2002-06-21 08:47:00 | "Format C:" should do it :) Boot up from the floppy and at the command prompt enter Format C: and press enter. If you want to split your drive up into 'logical' drives (say C: for WinXP, D: for data, E: for programs ... etc, etc) you need to use FDISK prior to Formatting to 'partition' the drive. It's a bit intimidating to use if you haven't used it before but might be worth your while if you have a large hard drive (20+ Gb). I have my 40Gb drive chopped up into drives C, D, E, F, G, H, I. It makes running Scandisk and Defrag so much quicker than checking a huge C: partition. I just need to check or defrag just a chunk of the drive when it's convenient. Hope this helps. |

Not sure what the command is in win xp but in win 98 it's restart in DOS mode then type c:\format c: /s/u The switches are /s : add system files; /u : unconditional Wait a while and see if anyone else has an advance on this for XP |

| 55891 | 2002-06-21 09:02:00 | Hi VK, If you formatted an MSDOS system disk through WinXP you will find only the following files on it: Directory of A:\ 08/06/2000 05:00 p.m. 58,870 EGA2.CPI 08/06/2000 05:00 p.m. 58,753 EGA3.CPI 08/06/2000 05:00 p.m. 58,870 EGA.CPI 08/06/2000 05:00 p.m. 21,607 KEYB.COM 08/06/2000 05:00 p.m. 34,566 KEYBOARD.SYS 08/06/2000 05:00 p.m. 31,942 KEYBRD2.SYS 08/06/2000 05:00 p.m. 31,633 KEYBRD3.SYS 08/06/2000 05:00 p.m. 13,014 KEYBRD4.SYS 08/06/2000 05:00 p.m. 29,239 MODE.COM 08/06/2000 05:00 p.m. 93,040 COMMAND.COM 08/06/2000 05:00 p.m. 17,175 DISPLAY.SYS 08/06/2000 07:55 p.m. 0 AUTOEXEC.BAT 08/06/2000 07:55 p.m. 0 CONFIG.SYS 13 File(s) 448,709 bytes 0 Dir(s) 889,344 bytes free As you can see you do not have FDISK or FORMAT. You are better off with an WIN98/98SE/ME boot diskette that will allow you to do what you are trying via floppy disk. Or you could boot off the WinXP (Home or Pro) cd if you are wanting to reinstall XP. As part of that you can have the install process reformat the harddrive. Anyone else got more to add (please!) Cheers, Babe. |
