56652 2002-06-23 02:14:00 Howdy all.
I have a socket 7 CPU that won't come away from the heatsink & thought about heating it slightly with a heat gun but have resisted the idea in fear of trashing it.
I can't put it into a M/board as I'm not sure what size or voltage it is. (I'll be able to tell when I get the damn h/sink off)
Anybody got any bright ideas?
Thanks

56653 2002-06-23 02:40:00 all i can think of at the mo is to carefully scrape away any paste at the edge and insert lever and carefully prise it up.(twisting the sink also helps). make sure you don't prise the cap off the cpu(k6).

carefully work it and it should come free.

good luck, i hope the last person didn't glue it on (had that before :( )

56654 2002-06-23 02:42:00 i forgot the other way is to get a fine piece of nylon or wire and use it to slice through the paste. note tie some sticks to the end of wire to give you something to hang on to. don't want you ending up with no fingers. tweak'e (174)
56655 2002-06-23 04:22:00 It was frequent practice to "elephant glue" heatsinks to socket 7 chips. tr cl (573)

elephant glue is along the lines of "100mph tape"

elephant glue is super glue, there was a time where they had an advertising campaign to do with their glue being able to hold an elephant still. it was either that or elephant glue was a glue manufacturer, or maybe even the glue was made from elephants.

"100mph tape" is Duct Tape, which is commonly used in speedway at speeds that fast.

56658 2002-06-23 05:43:00 cyanoacrylate = "superglue = "elephant glue" due to advert where 2 drops would lift an elephant.

Its not made out of elephants, as in muscilage adhesive is made out of horses.

In the category of useless information...
