56602 2002-06-22 22:59:00 I have a Compaq 4128 and sometimes when it boots up from cold the video display acts like the resolution settings are wrong with the screen unreadable ....sometimes it will correct itself ...... or if I alt -cntl - del to reboot it boots up fine. Tried the obivious like updating video drivers and altering display settings etc but it still happens .... anyone got ideas?? Will (553)
56603 2002-06-22 23:24:00 I don't know the 4128, but if it is reasonably old, it may have a 'non-digital' monitor - in terms of sync processing. In which case, the monitor may have aged to the point where it can't sync when cold. After warming the sync circuit has drifted back into range, and an interruption to the signal (rebooting) allows the sync to catch.

Check on the monitor electronics for controls marked something like: Horizontal lock, Horizontal phase, vertical lock and if they exist, give them a tweek. Obviously, beware of lethal voltages around monitors.

56604 2002-06-22 23:25:00 Is this the only fault?
I wonder if what you are seeing is a boot to safe mode (which is low resolution) caused by another problem?

I am not familiar with the 4128, but think its probably a 133 Mhz windows 95 machine from about 1996-98. Onboard everything including monitor.
I am not sure if it would affect it, but is the CMOS ram battery OK? should be just about dead by now.
May be causing settings to be lost on first boot, hence some defaults used?
Is it keeping time and date ok after being turned off for a while, this is an early sign?

56605 2002-06-22 23:27:00 Good one Wuppo, if I am right it is non-digital (on board all-in-one)
Would not quite look like a default 640-480 but would explain it correcting itself.
