Are you are possibly aware, it is not all that difficult to decipher what sort of chip it is from the underside markings. Any decent tekkie will give a ball park guess; then you can see if it fires up. Socket 7 chips that are not glued to heatsink assemblies can sometimes be bought for very small amounts of money; say $15 to $50, depending on the manufacturer and the specification. |

There are no markings on the underside, but I think from memory it is an AMD 233 I might just chuck it in a board & set the jumpers to a 233 & see what happens. Hopefully it will loosen up with a bit of warming. Thanks for your help. |

Modern semiconductors can take infra-red heating for soldering purposes, solder baths and all manner of semi-incandescent activities without harm . You can certainly heat it to ouch-ooh-ahh stage without any worries and those temperatures will weaken most glues, 100mph tape and quite possibly 400 & 600 mph tape too! It is heating from the inside that kills semiconductors, i . e excessive internal current/power dissipation, because for the outside to get to say 50 degrees C, the inside needs to be a hell of lot hotter!! | 56670 | 2002-06-26 14:05:00 | I sucked it in tonight & stuck it in front of the heater. For too long & too hot methinks! Man it was hot (Wanna see my thumb?!!!!!!) It came off, it was stuck on with some black stuff & when it cooled down again it went rock hard. Managed to scrape enough of the stuff off to discover it is an AMD 300 & I have nothing to try it in at the moment. So I don't know yet if it still goes or not. I've got another board arriving tomorrow & if it goes I'll give you a ring. |
