57033 2002-06-24 23:25:00 Does anybody know if you can use remote assitance for helping out a friend who uses ME - (from my XP) its is easy to do xp to xp - i know i can use the wizard, but wondered if anybody has done it and knows if it works OR if not what else could i use e.g VPN (which i haven't used) or another prgram along those lines. :-) Thanks in advance! 57034 2002-06-24 23:46:00 You cannot use remote assisstance on an ME PC. Remote assisstance is not instlled on ME machines for a start, but even if you tried to install it, I doubt it would work. You are better off using a VPN app as you suggest.

I recommend VNC Viewer (www.uk.research.att.com), a progam developed under the GNU GPL (read 'free') by Cambridge University.

You install the server on the ME PC (very easy - excellent instructions).

You must know the IP address of both PC's.

You then set up a new client on the ME PC with the XP PC's IP address (email the IP addresses to each other if you are using dial-up with dynamic IP addresses). You also specify a password to prevent malicious unauthorised access.

If you have an internet browser that accepts java (IE) and are not behind a proxy, then you can connect to the ME machine using IE, otherwise, VNC comes with it's own viewer.

The ME user can terminate a connection at any time, and can see what you are doing on the screen. MSN messenger or ICQ or similar can be used for chat.

VNC is easy even for newbies to use (with a little guidance)

If you have any probs, post to this thread.

Happy computing.

57035 2002-06-26 05:47:00 :) - Thanks heaps Graham (you always come through for me and my probs.) Thanks for the link it was just what i am looking for - but - i may need you to give me a little additional help if thats not a prob?:)
When i direct her to download it (on her ME) what packages will she need to tick? Would it be the: Windows 9x/2000/NT (Intel Win32)?
I can't seem to find anything there for ME or am i on the wrong track there? Also cause we are on dial-up like you said so the dynamic ip addy thing comes in - where do we find the ip address? Like for me in xp i just go to my connection details and it gives me the: Server ip address and the client ip address - i presume i/we use the client ip addy? Is that right? Sorry if i am overlooking something! The thing is i have to be very CLEAR with the person i am getting to download the server on ME, cause she is not that experienced (neither am i really) so i want to make sure i give her the right instructions on downloading it at her end! Her computer is in a big enough mess now by the sounds of things - hence the reason i am resorting to this, so i can see what is going on there!! Up till now we are communicating via i.c.q and at times there are things she just can't explain and says that don't make sense - so its become very time consuming to do the simplist of things at times! Personally i think she needs to do a clean out and reinstall, from my dealings with her, but anyway we will try this first!!! Once again Graham thanks for your time and help its most appreciated!!! And ME sounds like a real prob of a system going from the posts i see on here and others i know with it - gee glad i use XP!!! Thanks and bye.

57036 2002-06-26 06:47:00 OK,

ME is pretty much a rebuild of 98.

All she has to do is give her details (they can be fake if you want), and tick the box beside Windows 9x/2000/NT, and then click the Proceed to Download button.

You are then shoen a screen with several (six) links in a table. Click on the link wich says zipped archive (zip). The installer will then proceed to download.

Once it is downloaded, unzip the archive to a temp folder. The zip archive contains a folder called vnc_x86_win32. Inside this folder are two folders. One is called vncviewer and the other winvnc.

Open winvnc and double-click setup.exe.

This runs the installer.

Click OK at the first warning message (tells you to uninstall old versions first).

Then next and OK your way through to the end.

When you are ready to help, get her to connetc to the internet.

She can then go to Start>Program Files>Run WinVNC (App Mode). All she has to do is type a password in the box and click OK (leave all the other options alone).

A icon appears in the system tray. If she holds her mouse over the icon, a pop-up balloon appears which says WinVNC - %IP Address% She can just copy this down and send to you with ICQ (She should also let you know what the password is. DO NOT send it with the IP address - ICQ is not secure. Organise to use a specified password beforehand.

You should now be able to type http://%IPADDRESS%:5800 into IE where %IPADDRESS% is her IP address.

Or, you can unzip the same zip-file as was downloaded on the ME machine, and open the folder labelled vncviewer, and run vncveiwer.exe Type her IP address into the box and click OK.

In both situatios you will be asked to enter the passsword, and will then be connected to your friends PC with full control. You will see what she is doing on the screen, and she will see what you are doing when you take over.

Any probs, give me a yell.

Thanks heaps and heaps Graham - I am hoping i won't have to do the install to, and the above way works fine. Reason being in theory if we do it this way and i don't install it - i will have access to her computer but she won't be able to fiddle with mine? Is that right? [i]Hate to think of the mess she could cause to my puter if she had access!! LOL - Guess it wouldn't matter if i only installed the viewer at my end eh and not the server!!!
Thanks again Graham :)

57039 2002-06-27 11:07:00 So it worked?? If yes, that's great! There is no need to install it on your PC, just use IE, or the viewer. Even if you did though, as long as you didn't tell her your password, then she wouldn't be able to get access.

You can run vncviewer.exe without installing VNC server (It's in the other folder in the zip file).

Glad I could be of assisstance.
