56990 2002-06-24 12:47:00 Hi people, Some of may have already seen me ranting about this problem, but as of yet I have been unable to solve it. Acer laptop, P2 300, 128Mb Ram, Lucent Winmodem - The computer suffers from random complete lockups while using the internet. Machine needs to be turned off and started again as ctrl+alt+del dosent do anything. Have tried windows 2000 pro, and windows 98se (original os) and the problem still occurs. Also following prior recommendation here, I changed IE version from IE6 to IE5, then applied all available patches to IE5 & the problem has reocurred. The last time it locked, there was nothing else unusual on the machine, no antivirus or zonealarm or anything like that, just the OS and Office 2k. What I'm thinking is that it may have something to do with the Lucent winmodem (thats all thats left LOL) which has the most recent driver, but apparently are known to have problems. Anyone have any idea of what could be causing this? Winmodem a likely problem? Any known issues with office 2k? What about display drivers? I am using the ones supplied on the recovery cd for this OS. At my wits end here!!! Thanks heaps for your help. Prodigy (428)
56991 2002-06-24 12:49:00 Oh and I should add that the hardware has been checked, and the modem replaced. This leaves me with some sort of software problem - but what ??? Prodigy (428)
56992 2002-06-24 23:47:00 Try Different Ram. Ram Problems mainly cause a computer to freeze. Kiwi (555)
56993 2002-06-25 01:03:00 Is it possible to get a PCMCIA modem and try that for a while to see if the lockups go away? CYaBro (73)
56994 2002-06-25 02:45:00 Lock up problems are often caused by faultly ram or video problems
However in your case the lock ups only happen when using the modem,so it is unlikley to be that.
Try using a external modem and see if that fixes it.
You say it is a win modem so it must be a pc card modem?

Lucent based win modems are bad for making pc,s lock up and sometimes reboot for no reason, especially on older pc,s

56995 2002-06-25 04:49:00 In my experience lockups are often caused by users installing software off the Internet and not knowing what is happening. A few days ago I went to a persons place and found IE5 installed on C:\Programs\etc where I would expect it. Also IE5.5 and IE6.0 in the root of drive D:

This person could dial the ISP and connect but couldn't use the browser and couldn't get Email.

The person can now but only because I formatted C: and reloaded. I had tried uninstalling Dialup and reinstalling but it didn't help.

I just couldn't beleive the dlls I found in the root directory of D:

I found more dlls in the D:\Download directory as well.

YES.... Hardware can have a problem like a few volts coming up the phone line during a thunderstorm and frying the modem and even the motherboard.

Usually though it's people fiddling.

re Lucent Winmodems I have seen these in a few computers and generally they work well. I had one myself for some time but want to use Linux as well as WinXP and Win98 on the same machine. Linux is better with either ISA Internals or External modems.

56996 2002-06-30 08:53:00 Thanks heaps for your help people. For some reason I am no longer getting an email to tell me there has been a reply to my message... but anyways, such is the random nature of this laptop problem - it hasnt locked up for quite some time now. All I have done differently is clean off some scraps of old programs like GoZilla. If it happens again I will get hold of a PCMCIA modem and give that a go. I am presuming its not ram cos it happens only with IE & the net. If anyone has any other cunning suggestions I would be interested to hear! Otherwise, I'll keep you posted :-) Prodigy (428)
