56831 2002-06-24 04:07:00 have following appearence problem with word documents. When typing the line and all following lines typed on are highlighted black - reasonalbly inconvenient when you consider that most typing is done in black. Have a suspicious feeling that it is linked to video card problem. Video Card is not recognised by winpro2000 as anything other than "video controllor (VGA compatible)". Driver disk is not avaliable and therefore has not been installed. Not sure of all of specs of computer - not intel, 13gig HD 128MB. Business computer. Office XP

56834 2002-06-24 22:42:00 I'm not certain you have a video card problem. The first thing I would do is to RENAME the file "normal.dot" to "normal.old". When Word starts it will not find the normal.dot file and will create a new normal.dot. Often this file gets corrupted.

If that doesn't fix it the you can rename normal.old to normal.dot again and you won't have broken anything.

56835 2002-06-24 23:11:00 I too am not sure its a video card problem. Characters are sent as graphics to the screen, and a video card problem would be unlikely to just change the background on a neat row by row case.

If its not normal.dot, its puzzling.

Have you tried changing the font, in case its a corrupted font?

56836 2002-06-25 03:06:00 The video card is a problem because it is not installed. Weather this means It's causing the current problem, I am not sure. I will try the normal.dot thingy but it happens with all files not just one and it's not a font problem. As you can see I have experimented with the fint. I even had to change it's colour so it could be read Erin Wilson (504)
56837 2002-06-28 21:19:00 To anyone interested in this problem, we have fixed it.
It was word being stupid in reaction to the video drivers not being installed!
The machine, and Word, are now working beautifully!

56839 2002-06-28 22:46:00 No problem Elephant!

The least we can do after asking people to consider problems we don't know how to deal with, is to share the results when we do finally (hopefully) find the solution. Those who took the time to take interest in what we were doing, and offer suggestions deserve atleast this in return, thus we all learn.

I consider it a simple common courtesy
