56803 2002-06-24 00:31:00 Hi

I was wondering if there are any digital camera gurus that may be able to help me. I have just returned from Japan where I bought an entry level point and shoot Olympus Camedia C-300 Zoom. This model appears to be identical on the exterior to the American model which is the labelled D-550 Zoom. I chose this camera because the on screen menus could be displayed in English and the salesperson through an interpreter assured me there would be no problem and they would mail me an English version of the instruction manual.

My problem is that on my return I find the CD with all of the software is only Japanese and will not even install on my PC because I don't have a Japanese version of the OS. When I connect to my PC via USB, Windows ME is unable to locateand communicate with the camera. I (perhaps wrongly) assumed the camera would function fine although a trip to the Olympus website states this model is not made for use outside of Japan.

My questions are has anybody else had a similar experience and was it possible to find a solution? Or can anybody offer a solution other than ditching it? I think I don't really need the Olympus software all I really need to be able to do is move my images from the camera/smartmedia to my computer because I can use any software of my choice for viewing, right?

Cheers and thanks in advance

56805 2002-06-24 01:20:00 Hi wingo,

don't own an Olympus . . . have a Sony . . . . but

You may be able to purchase the CAMEDIA v4 . 0 s/w over the net through Olympus Emporium

. olympusamerica . com/innards/emp . asp?category=1&sub_category=28" target="_blank">emporium . olympusamerica . com

Or get a Olympus FlashPath Floppy Disk Adapter from an Olympus camera retailer:

Quote from web:
" . . . The Olympus FlashPath Adapter is a SmartMedia™-to-3 . 5” floppy disk adapter .
This product enables you to read picture data stored on SmartMedia (the memory
card used in Olympus digital cameras) on a desktop computer equipped with a
standard 3 . 5" floppy disk drive .

The FlashPath adapter is one of the easiest ways to transport and download
images and it doesn't require using the camera or cables . All SmartMedia cards
up to 16MB are supported; 32MB SmartMedia will be supported in the near future
with an updated software driver .

This product is currently supported on Windows® 3 . 1, Windows® 95/98, Windows® NT,
and Mac® OS operating systems . The FlashPath package includes the adapter
(in a protective case), two lithium batteries, software diskettes, and an
operation manual .

You can purchase the MAFP-2E Flashpath Adapter at most Olympus digital
camera retailers (part #200557) or online from the Olympus Emporium . . . "

Cheers, Babe .

56806 2002-06-24 01:28:00 Most(?) cameras function as a USB storage device and don't need a specific driver for Windows ME . If your USB is working for other devices then I guess it's not the case with that camera .

A worst case senario for you would be to buy a smartcard reader to plug into the USB port, they tend to work faster than cameras at transfering data anyway, you can get them for around $150 . You just put the card from the camera into the reader and off you go - better option than ditching the camera .

56807 2002-06-24 01:29:00 If it uses smartmedia, don't worry about the camera software.

You can buy smartmedia readers (usb) for about $100. Mine does smartmedia and compactflash.

Also you can get smartmedia floppy disk adapters for closer to $200, slower but versatile.

Any software should work for viewing as they will probably be jpg files.

I use a fuji camera which works as above, never used the supplied software.

56808 2002-06-24 03:37:00 Thanks Babe, godfather, and Brent P

I had come to the conclusion after a bit more research that a card reader might provide a solution so I will check out the local stores for their offerings. I guessed the Camedia software is irrelevant, it is probably just an average set of imaging utilities, so it seems as though the card reader will allow access to and transfer of the files on the camera.

Thanks for the pearls
