56936 2002-06-25 07:12:00 There is nothing quite like a husband who, after severe warnings not to, visits such sites and then asks his wife to fix his computer.

Seriously annoyed wives will respond in one of the following ways:

- Tell him that he broke it, it's about time he learnt to fix it
- Fix it, then change his security settings and block various sites
- Reformat his computer - without saving his email or favourites - and lose all his wonderful game scores.

Such sites can and do cause problems - changing home pages, emailing spam and installing software such as new dial-ups.

Boys will be boys but girls were not created primarily to clean up after them!

56937 2002-06-25 07:32:00 You remind me of a phone call i got from my friend Erin who had to remove a "dialer" from a "boys" computer....
Everyone was blaming everyone else, it was hillarious!
the dialer was trying so hard to dial out that it had reduced the computer it was on to silly putty... fortunatly the machine didn't have a phone line, as it connected via another machine on the network.
I've even had a visitor go to such a site, and leave me with a dialer here, but as my machine has no modem, i didnt get a huge toll bill from that one!

56938 2002-06-25 07:48:00 Grandad,

Back to the original topic.

In the beginning the web was a nice wholesome place to be. Unfortunately in the last few years the marketing people have seen it as a place to make a fortune. First there were ads, then banner ads, then the pop-up ads, then the pop-under ads... and so it goes on.

When something is new it tends to work, then sales trickle off. (People develop what is known as "Ad Blindness"). The creative marketing people are always looking to find a new way to sell and get people passed the blindspot ... and they take lessons from the Insurance Companies.

You know the type of ad... "For peace of mind and the sake of your loved ones it is Absolutely Essential that you insure your left thumb for $50,000 for only $1 a day" (and the fine print says the cover is only valid if you fall down exactly 3 steps after tripping over the neighbour's dog - who's name, date of birth and pedigree for 5 generations is listed in advance).

Consider the following ads:
"It's a really good idea to optimize your computer"
"Your computer is not optimized!"

Which one gets your attention? (Particularly if it's flashing and fills the screen)

If something comes up to scare you - it's almost certainly an ad. Close it and move on.

56939 2002-06-25 21:57:00 Heather, I couldn't have explained it better. :-)

Just for the record, in case people start to get the wrong idea about me, my two visits to certain unsavoury pages were accidental - and very shortlived may I add.

The first time was when I was fairly new to the internet and clicked on a link in one of the first spam emails that I had received. It wasn't obvious where the link would end up, being an invitation to find your friends online or something like that. Never again! I now have a very efficient spam gobbler - my index finger! :D

The second time I had done a search (not in Google) on gardens and clicked on a innocent sounding link expecting to find gardens of the green leafy variety. Not so. :-(

And that's when I came across those dreadful rapid pop-up tricks that scare the living daylights out of people.

Needless to say I'm more careful where I click these days, no matter how innocent they sound. To Google's credit, I have never been led astray using their search engine and haven't bothered with any others. We live and we learn.

So Grandad, that's how I'm an expert on accidental site discovery! ;-)

56943 2002-06-26 02:43:00 Hey Youse all!!!!

What did I Start !!!!! :8}

In all Innocence I was looking for some CHRISTIAN BANNERS for a Dear Soul at our Church. She was wanting some ideas in order to make a new one.

When the ??threat!!!! turned up I panicked and shut down .that was why I couldn't remember the site it appeared on

It would appear that there has been a stirring of some past indiscretions?? and some confessions?? which is supposed to be good for the soul.Perhaps these days Church Sites are not "safe places" to be visiting?

Anyway I love you all & thanks for the entertainment and the wit and the clever minds I have watched at work And for all the help & advice
God Bless You All

56944 2002-06-26 03:02:00 Unfortunatly the internet has it's share of nasty people, and some will try to lead you to places you would not normally go. One of the tricks to do this is to create misleading keywords that makes the search engines list the site as something very differant to what it actually is
Just to create balance i have used the same trick. Any one searching for "gorgeous *****" will find near the top of the list a page dedicated to pugwash the dog (girl dog, 4 legs, very cute!), which is probably not what they had in mind.
Ultimatly you never know what you are going to stumble upon on the net. Good and bad, it's all there, just like the rest of the planet. We all must use caution, and take care, and remember.. net advertisers have the least morals, and will do anything to get people to thier sites, or buy thier products/services!

56945 2002-06-26 06:09:00 I guess if an alien came to earth, plonked itself down on the couch with a beer (after first removing the dog from said couch) and turned on the idiot box in the corner it's eyes would goggle on it's stalks. "Hand me a credit card" it would say, "the stuff out there is out of this world!"

(I guess all this 'cause children do it all the time).

As adults we are (most of us, most of the time) immune to the ads. (When else do you make the coffee?)

Web ads are harder to ignore because they are unpredictable. They don't appear for 3 minutes every 10 minutes and they take all sorts of different shapes and forms. Well designed ads appear part of a site rather than an ad.

Learning to spot ads (and learning to ignore them) is all part of the game.

Now.... what can I sell you today?.... ;\
