2002-06-24 07:06:00 | Hi to the F1 family Can someone please advise me the procedure required when faced with the above threat? I have been hitting the off button and rebooting . Hoping that the BLUE screen and the resulting scan will work yet again. Am I likely to be causing any trouble /damage when doing this A confused Grandad W

2002-06-24 07:14:00 | I suspect all you are seeing is a "banner advertisement" trying to lure you into downloading some software in the hope that you will like it and pay for it. If so, its only an ad, like on TV "call now and order" etc. It is annoying and you can get software to stop them appearing Please tell us where you see this "warning", is it on a web page, and if so which one? We will be able to check it out and put your mind at rest.

2002-06-24 07:27:00 | I thought I would just confirm what godfather said. It is just a banner advertising a piece of software. Your computer is always going to be at threat to a degree. That is why there are Antivirus software and Firewalls among others. If you have these don't worry. If you don't there are free versions of these you can quite periodicaly download from the PC World CD. :)

2002-06-24 08:18:00 | I think these "threats" are banners too Just too be sure, i'll describe a typical banner add in greater detail we would be talking about an add, usually a crude animated add, that is about 150mm wide and 30mm high, the size of the add on the top of the pressf1 page the add embedded in the PCworld heading. If it is one of those, it is harmless, apart from that it has encouraged you to put your computer at risk through bad shutdowns. There is another one that almost got me, it flashes that i have one message waiting for me, and the temptation to click on the banner ALLMOSt got me before i asked myself, one message in what???????

2002-06-24 09:31:00 | Thanks to all who responded I had been having a spot of bother to get the enquiry to post and after about the 3rd/4th attempt and re-write I forgot to mention that I was unable to CLOSE the offending window. All I was getting were Warning chimes .Also the site covered the whole screen bar, the Menu,Tool,& address bar. The threat!!was in the middle of the screen and was about the size that Chris described it had a Exclaimation (!) mark on a yellow background and perported to be m/soft IE the closing( X ) was greyed out. as a result I did not have acccess to the Start button toget at the shut down control G.W

2002-06-24 09:40:00 | K, some sites have a bit of code in them that forces them to use the whole screen, this code was of course originally intended for better things than this.... press F11 F11 will open/close full screen mode. Failing that pressing ctrl+alt+del will give you the option of shutting down selected programms (such as internet explorer) BTW, what operating system are you using? I would hate to be giving advise that doesn't apply to you.

2002-06-24 09:53:00 | Hi grandad Get yourself some software as suggested above to rid yourself of this and other annoyances. Some suggestions: Outpost Firewall - www.agnitum.com (also has a handy ad blocker & ad trash can) Adaware - www.lavasoftusa.com/downloads.html SpyBotSD - patrick.kolla.de All are free HTH Murray P

Some sites, usually the places where you shouldn't be anyway ;-) , bombard you with pop-up windows faster than you can blink. If you ever come across these just sit tight and calmly do the two-finger salute - hold down Alt and press F4 as fast as they pop up. It works for banners and all other programs too! :-) |

2002-06-24 10:30:00 | You said it was full screen and covered the start menu and task bar. Some legitimate programs do this as well. A few very useful keyboard commands are: <Alt>+<Tab> - Hold down the Alt key and tap the tab key. This will show which windows you have open . When you release both keys the one you are on will open. <Windows Key> - bottom, second from left on keyboard. Will open the start button and show the taskbar If your keyboard doesn't have a <Windows key> use <ctrl>+<esc> <Alt><F4> will close the current open window - useful for the annoying ad.
