56809 2002-06-24 03:24:00 I can finally get JetStream in my area. Any suggestions for what type of internal ADSL Modem to get ? Someone told avoid Nokia, any ideas why? najopito (596)
56810 2002-06-24 03:33:00 I use a Nokia Ni200 internal PCI modem. Despite everyone around me lambasting my card, it has never given me any problem and I host online games without any problem. Plus it is so damn cheap!!!

I'm not sure but I thought several months ago there were news that Nokia is pulling out of the modem business. Not sure if that's true or j

56811 2002-06-24 03:35:00 The cheaper one available appears to be no longer supplied, have heard of some less than easy installs as well. One acquaintance took 2 weeks and professional assistance to install, driver problems.

I use Alcatel router external on network, makes for trouble free setup plus reasonable protection with NAT setup.

56812 2002-06-24 03:43:00 Heard the same rumour as nzStan regarding Nokia... but can't sem to put a hard fact on it yet.

I too have been coerced into ADSL and have been looking seriously at external ADSl ethernet/router. The one I'm thinking of is the Asustek AAM6000EV External ADSL Router and am interested also in other models/brands and insights from others. Also looked at Alcatel Godfather and interested in your comments.

Appreciate any and all info and 'reader' responses.

Cheers, Babe.

Can you run a shared Internet connection on it?

56814 2002-06-24 04:00:00 You can find some useful information from (mostly) experienced ADSL users at www.unixathome.org/adsl Capt Jimbo (17)
56815 2002-06-24 04:33:00 I've got the Asus 6000EV, and apart from the DNS relaying not working properly, it works gr8.

The DNS problem manifests itself in the router 'going awol' for about a minute and not communicating with anything every now and again. This tends to co-inside with DNS requests! The simple way round it is to embed DNS IPs in your PC's TCP/IP setup. Perhaps the next firmware upgrade will sort it...

56816 2002-06-24 04:40:00 Hi BR

Nokia announced some months back that they were exiting the modem market in NZ. Tech Pacific was to take over distribution (of residual stocks?) and Nokia closed its doors inside of a month.

Good news is, the decision didn't automatically turn good products into bad and my Ni500 goes just great. There have also been some very good prices going from DSE and others as they quit their stock.

Cheers

56817 2002-06-24 04:42:00 Thanks to you all especially Capt Jimbo & wuppo, have now ordered an Asus 6000EV for $293 incl GST & freight. There will now be three of us here with the same model including a cisco tech who is looking at the dns issue (among others) as we 'speak'.

Cheers, Babe.

56818 2002-06-24 04:43:00 I got further infor form the person who siad avoid Nokia ones. They said "Basically, the drivers are crap, and they are incompatible with the Telecom phone system in a lot of situations." najopito (596)
