57345 2002-06-27 09:23:00 When I say manual, I mean go to the website, and download the update or definition package. (Usually a lot bigger than than the usual update as you get everything as the site does not know what you alrady have).

Using the NAV utility is what I consider automatic.

57346 2002-06-27 09:28:00 I would like to know how to download the latest dat files from Nortons, as when my year was up it warned me, then cut me off from live update, and when I try and manually download them, it lets me download, but won't let them install, as it says my year is up. Not quite those words, but that is what it means. As for Avg and Nortons, I run an up to date AVG and also haven't disabled nortons, and don't have hassles. Mind you, today I got the yaha virus, but only cos my avg dat files werent' up to date. And formatting isn't an option, as I haven't got that confident with this puter stuff yet. LOL supergran (108)

57348 2002-06-27 12:17:00 I have just been to the site an downloaded the "intellegent updates". It went thru all the drama, and then said it couldn't install because my subscription had expired.

What gives?

57349 2002-06-27 17:56:00 I've used both Norton and AVG and after reading several reviews and test results have returned to my Nortons again. It appears that about the only thing that beats it is Panda Anti Virus currently. I've also just run several friends through removing Yaha from their systems and have had no end of trouble with the AVG resident sheild and actual removal of the virus remains.
My Nortons is a 3 month OEM version but after using the removal tool provided by Norton and reinstalling I now have a years sub :D
I suggest give that a try and if all else fails then grab AVG from www.Grisoft.com as it is better than nothing at all. Just like you should always do....be very wary when opening emails

57350 2002-06-28 01:57:00 Hi Dipstick:

I would be interested in finding out where you downloaded the NAV uninstall tool. According to their site, they advise to uninstall from Add/Remove..... evidently the tool won't remove all traces (it retains details of when NAV was installed etc)

I used to download all the virus definitions/updates manually, but now find that I have been "locked out" also. I can download everything but it won't install.

I rang Symantec to renew my subscription, but it is going to cost around $90, as I have an OEM version. If I had purchased a copy retail it would have only been a minimal price..... I have re-installed AVG, but personally would prefer to run NAV. Might have to save my pennies and buy a full version.

57351 2002-06-28 12:06:00 If money is the issue I would download AVG. I had norton and when it ran out I downloaded AVG and I personally find it just as good and it's free and you don't have the hassle of going to the site to get the free downloads (if you can still get them) Try it. Caro (562)
57352 2002-06-28 13:05:00 The NAV removal tool is located in their faq pages. If I remember rightly its located in the faq on having trouble installing Norton 2000/01/02. Use that and also run a registry cleaner through and check to make sure the folder has gone from the program files in ya maindrive. dipstick01 (445)
57353 2002-06-28 22:05:00 This is terrific. Thanks to all. Going to unistall Norton this afternoon and install AVG. Hope Norton uninstalls itself well because I'm at the level where the registry is an 'angels fear to tread' territory. mark c (247)
