hey that's a good idea. I wonderered if that was poss. then like a doctor you can get a second opinion, (virus scans). Mind only run one at a time. Thanks. :)

57327 2002-06-26 05:35:00 AVG is really good. I'd recommend it. -=JM=- (16)

Excuse me, but where did you hear this? i manually downloaded defs from symantec for over 12months, and this never happened. You are free to manually download for eternity (you know what I mean). How would they police this anyway? IP address changes dynamically, and once downloaded, they have no idea where it is installed to.

Sorry, but surely you made this up!

57329 2002-06-26 10:18:00 It happened to me. When my sub expired and I tried to download updates manually from the USA site, I was locked out.

57330 2002-06-26 10:35:00 Really! How did they know your sub had died? Maybe it is a new feature which talks to Nortons when you are online. This could be halted with a firewall. I recently did a reinstall, and so have live update, but before that, my sub had been long gone, and I nver had probs.

57331 2002-06-26 10:45:00 By the sound of it I suspect that Nortons have built in some kind of limiting feature to the newer versions of NAV. They do harp on about subscriptions a bit on their website but I haven't read any more than a snippet of it.

My NAV is circa 1998 and up until my first reformat last December I could do a live virus definition update whenever I chose to. After the format something went ping and now I can only do manual updates.

Doesn't bother me as long as I can get them for free. :D

57332 2002-06-26 11:22:00 They have built in subscription expiry for some retail products in the CD. When you buy the product, it may even have less than a year to run. You can see this if you buy the OEM versions at flea markets for $2. They will run for about three months and expire. Marty2001 (421)

yep.....even the full ver only runs for 12 months. mind you if you format & reinstall every 12 months its not a problem *hint*

57334 2002-06-26 12:56:00 didn't know if this is still a current topic or you have already solved the problem.
Further to my post about norton sub being $5 US-- I got it wrong. I just went through the sub system for norton and the price is $10 US and you can pay by Credit card ( didn't complete it as my sub is still current from my last renewal )
Cheers
