57258 2002-06-25 22:56:00 Have had a vaguely sensible idea... if people are ignoring your warnings and asking for manuals perhaps it's for a reason - the things are very hard to find and they are desperate.

Is this a glimmering of an e-commerce idea? You source the manuals and on sell them at $10 each?

If it's user manuals they are after I could scan in a couple to start your collection.

57259 2002-06-25 23:36:00 whats the addy for your site. would love to have a look :) tweak'e (174)
57260 2002-06-25 23:50:00 I like the idea of charging for the manuals but $10 is a bit cheap. Service manuals or basically any sort of manual is like gold for some of the older models especially. It could be quite time consuming for the return however but you could just post a link titled manuals which takes the user off to a google search, I just tried it and got quite a few hits and maybe some people will actually use it once it is thrust under their nose?? dipstick01 (445)
57261 2002-06-25 23:52:00 Oh no! tweak'e wants a manual too! :-) :D LOL Susan B (19)

57263 2002-06-26 00:56:00 Actually, now that i have looked at the page, i think the problem might stem from the page being so huge, that people don't bother looking through it.

Sad fact about people
They dont care.
You may have the best work ever, people will skim the first 2 paragraphs and email you with a request for what they were looking for.

What ever solution you do, may have to be repeated in order to be noticed.

Have you considered ajusting the mailto links with the subject line "Do Not ask for manuals"?

57264 2002-06-26 01:22:00 Dipstick,

I was thinking user manuals - like the ones we have here, thus the $10 idea.

Merely food for thought. How much would you pay for user manuals? service manuals?

Another food for thought idea is approach the local TV repair shop for sponsorship to run the site.

It's called "How to turn a negative into a positive"

57265 2002-06-26 01:52:00 Susans link is wrong, try this:

homepages.paradise.net.nz

seriously, have a look!
You would think they would get the message, but the link is easily found by google and perhaps they are ESOL?

57266 2002-06-26 01:59:00 Ummm.... I didnt bold that - BUG ALERT!

If I dredge up my history, I am qualified in TV and Video fields as well, and I second the suggestion that a link to chargeable PDFs would be great but issues of copyright and sheer management of it - whew!

Just sourcing them in the first place would be a nightmare (which is why they keep trying)

Probably if it was me I would simply state "I do not have manuals, do not ask" and a link to Google may be more effective - the font at present is so big you tend not to see enough of the text to read it with full comprehension

73's
(or 88's for Susan)

-I suspect E.ric will know what that means ;-)

57267 2002-06-26 02:22:00 Godfather,

Copyright issues can be overcome. At work we put Environmental Law judgements for sale on-line - with the blessing of the Courts. In fact, they have a link to us. (We buy them from them then on-sell them).

It takes an approach to the source of the information.

Another solution would be to create a link for each brand called "Manual" or "Further Information" that links to each manufacturers site. Leave them to sort the problem.

Agreed it would be a management issue but if the demand is there it might be financially worth it.
