57618 2002-06-27 02:31:00 FAQ # 5 Why does scandisk/defrag stop after only 10%?
Okay, To my knowledge, the first 10% are dedicated to scandisk, if it's enabled. It'll stop after that because there would be other programs running in the background. Look down the bottom right hand corner and see if there's anything there other than say, the monitor settings, and the sound settings icon. Everything else, probably needs to go.
Try left or right-clicking on it and exiting the program, Including Anti-Virus software. Close down all open progs that you can.
If it still doesn't work, press ctrl+alt+del and check, really, you only need systray and explorer.
Anything else, will likely stop it.
After that, run a re-boot to re-open all your start-up progs and anti-virus software etc. hopefully the re-boot may be a bit faster after doing a de-frag

Again pplz, pls comment

57619 2002-06-27 03:37:00 This is a little ambiguous. Here are my comments

>Okay, to my knowledge...

This is not a great way to instill newbies with coinfidence in you abilities. If I looked at this, that sentence would be as far as I read before I hit the back button.

>...the first 10% are dedicated to scandisk...

The first 10% of what (I know what you mean, but you havent' explained this very well. A newbie will have no idea what you are talking about.

>Look down the bottom right hand corner...

Of what? the window? the screen? Where are they looking. What should they see?

What about safe mode?

You know what you mean, but a newbie won't. How about explainingthat because scandisk is performing a scan on the HD, every time an app writes to the disk it has to start again to check for any changes. exiting programs may stop disc activity. If it doesn't work, explain what safe mode is, and how to get there.

Just my 2p.

Alright, the first 10% of the system Defrag is dedicated to
scandisk, if it's enabled. It'll stop after that
because there would be other programs running in the
background. Look down the bottom right hand corner
and of the monitor see if there's anything there other than say, the
monitor settings, and the sound settings icon.
Everything else, probably needs to go.
Try left or right-clicking on it and exiting the
program, Including Anti-Virus software. Close down
all open progs that you can.
If it still doesn't work, press ctrl+alt+del and
check, really, you only need systray and explorer.
Anything else, will likely stop it. Open programs will always cause it to re-start because when a program is open it is writing (most of the time) to the HDD, and because the computer is defragmenting the HDD, if you are writing to it, intentionally or not, it will re-start to account for the new data, or edited data, and try to defrag that also.
After that, run a re-boot to re-open all your
start-up progs and anti-virus software etc. hopefully
the re-boot may be a bit faster after doing a
de-frag

That's a bit better! Thanks to Graham Petrie

57621 2002-06-27 05:29:00 My preference would be to suggest strongly that people should run Scandisk and Defrag only after a Safe Mode boot, or a boot to DOS . Point out that this is doing major operations on the system, and has to be able to do it safely . That is, with nothing else using the disk .

"You don't get to use your car while the oil is being changed . Have a cup of a beverage of your choice while the computer is being serviced," is useful advice .

57622 2002-06-27 09:49:00 Hi Jo

You might like to say to turn off the screen saver, as that will upset defrag, when it kicks in.

Also a lot of people ask "how do you Defrag Linux" the answer is linux does not need to be defraged. it sorts itself out

Is this not for Windows 9x, because I always do a scandisk first.

57624 2002-06-28 06:07:00 I have recently learnt that Find Fast (or Fast Find - also called Indexing in later Windows versions) is another cause of scandisk/defrag stopping because it is writing to the hard disk in the background.

Getting rid of it if it is not used is a good idea.

Who actually uses it?
SOP should be to remove it.

Hey, Chilliing Silence dude, good work. Is it worth saying "start in safe mode" if you are a real newbie? Because that just works without pain and at least it will run.

I don't remember seeing it in there.

57626 2002-06-28 22:27:00 I think it's an excellent idea to tell people that maintenance means Safe Mode. You need to be there coz you don't have to fret about what's running and what's not. Dunno why MS makes getting into Safe Mode as obscure as getting into BIOS but they do, and Newbies (bless'em, was one myself y'day) need to get it drilled into their/our heads to use Safe Mode.

My 2c worth.
