57523 2002-06-26 22:11:00 I recently upgraded my 533 Celeron chip to a 733 Celeron. After changing the CPU I was prompted to alter my CMOS settings. Since both chips run at 66MHz I simply pressed F10 and saved the existing settings.

On several occasions since then, when starting the PC in the morning (by pushing the "On" button) the fan starts up and power is provided to the mouse, but the computer doesn't actually boot. To get it to boot I then have to push the "Reset" switch.

Any help would be great.

57524 2002-06-26 22:16:00 Can you tell us a bit more about your system?

What OS etc.

57525 2002-06-26 22:57:00 Sorry - missed the vital info.
- Win2K Professional edition
- Epox motherboard capable of running up to an 800 CPU
- Award BIOS v6.00PG

Does this help?

There appear to be 3 BIOS upgrades available, but I'm scared stiff of making a mistake and frying the computer, so wanted to explore all other avenues.

3 points:
Even with my 533 chip (clock speed of 66MHz x 8) the jumper settings beside the CPU are set to 133MHz (jumpers are labelled Cyrix CPU Select in the manual). I didn't change the jumpers, as the 733 also runs at 66MHz - assumed they were being ignored by the Celeron chips.

CPU Ratio under Frequency/Voltage Control in CMOS Setup was set to x8 (which is fine for the 533). This is the maximum value available for selecting (unless you can manually type in values), so I left it at this.

Motherboard manual specifies capability for 500-800 chips (and TL-Systems assured me it would take up to a Celeron 800), but the list of compatible Celeron chips on the Epox website actually stops at 700. (although it can take up to a 900+ Coppermine chip)

I'm the PC turned on normally for the first 2-3 days after upgrading the CPU, so what have I done???

57528 2002-06-27 22:46:00 "Fixed Celeron 766 CPU BIOS detection."
bios upgrade (www.epox.com)

if you don't want to do it your self then pay a tech to do it.

57529 2002-06-28 01:24:00 Quite right - fixed 766 detection, but my chip is a 733 (not mentioned on the Epox site). Do you think the 766 fix covers earlier chipsets? LynH (669)
57530 2002-06-28 01:47:00 opps ..i need more cofeeeee ;-)

i would update the bios anyway.

57531 2002-07-02 02:16:00 Hi Tweak'e
Firstly, thanks for taking the time to reply.

Secondly, screwed up courage and upgraded the Bios. PC restarted from complete shutdown perfectly a couple of times. But this morning, same thing on startup - fan sounds and power to the CD-Drive but nothing else. Had to use Reset again.

So, to your other question:
My video card is an ATI 3D Rage Pro AGP 2X (GT-C2U2)

Any further clues?
