57638 2002-07-16 01:28:00 safe mode usually works. however you may want to increase your minimum virtual memory. eg 100meg or more (depends on the amount of ram you have. tweak'e (174)
57639 2002-07-16 01:36:00 Peter,
If anything writes to HD, even in the background it WILL mess up defrag, so unless you know exactly what program(s) do this, it is easiest to just shut them all down.
Nortons had a defrag program that seemed to cope with other things running. It could also arrange things so that that which you wanted to run fastest could be prioritized to the fastest parts of the disk.... NICE
If all you have is the standard M$ product, i'm afraid you'll just have to do it the hard way, like most of us do.

57640 2002-07-24 01:10:00 push ctrl alt delete and entask everthing except explorer and something else (sorry i for got ) then no programs should be wrighting to the disk so scan disk and defrag wont keep restarting Guest (0)

57642 2002-08-01 23:52:00 Sometimes while defragging it may appear that defragger is "stuck in one place"for longer than usual and nothing is happening except your HDD is still chirping away?

The answer to this is to be patient as it might be a large file being moved to where it can be optimised for faster recovery.

I had this happen to me recently whereby the weekly defrag that usually took 30mins,took 2 hours.

So if your Hard-drive is still clicking/blinking or is at least working away, just be "PATIENT"

Cheers,Kiwitas,;-)

57643 2003-12-20 22:07:00 My version of Norton Speedisk says it cannot run under Safe Mode !

I booted up in Safe Mode then Clicked on Speeddisk and it said it can't run in Safe Mode.

57644 2003-12-22 04:12:00 Have you tried disabling the Norton suite and using Windows Scandisk? Chilling_Silently (228)

Digby has already asked this question in a new post now.

A friendly reminder that the FAQ's are not to be used to tag on problems, rather a new topic should be started :). Otherwise FAQ's meant to used as a reference for information get messy.

Perhaps it is time for another round of tidying up the FAQ's by updating (if necessary) and having the extraneous posts removed, and then getting the Moderators to lock it down. :)

57646 2003-12-22 04:29:00 Good point Jen, I'll re-write this thread tonight or tomorrow morning and make a fresh thread :-) Chilling_Silently (228)
57647 2003-12-22 04:44:00 It appears I have already cleaned this FAQ up and yet this thread has still been dug up?

If a Mod sees this, any chance we can get this thread locked too?
