1305651 2012-10-07 21:23:00 A member of an organisation I am involved with has got it into their head that we should have a content management system. This is something I know nothing about apart from the name and the general concept.

Has anyone here been involved in selecting/setting up/administering such a beast? Any insights would be very welcome. Also suggestions for possible products - which will almost certainly have to be free.

TIA.

1305652 2012-10-08 03:15:00 The three most popular open source (free) content management systems are WordPress (wordpress.org), Joomla (http:) and Drupal (http://drupal.org). I would recommend WordPress if you are new to using a CMS because of it's ease of use (you don't even have to know HTML). Joomla and Drupal are better if you know HTML and want more ability to customise the code.

Although WordPress has a famous '5-minute installation', this is for very tech-minded people who have done it before. Try to find a hosting provider that offers 'one click WordPress install' if you really want to make things simple. Look for a New Zealand hosting provider that specialises in WordPress hosting.

1305655 2012-10-08 22:50:00 One 'gotcha' as above, is that if there's a vulnerability in the CMS itself, how it puts together webpages is going to potentially leave you vulnerable. Further, b ecause of the prolific use of Wordpress and other major CMSs is that like with a hole in Windows, it's gonna get alot more attention due to market share.

I put together a forum using PHPBB with basically a vanilla install as part of a university paper. Wasn't particularly difficult. Hardest part was finding a free host, heh.

Any PHP based CMS is a target. Or PHP non-CMS.
Keep it updated and you're fine.

Your organisation will likely need a content management system for legal reasons.

For example the IRD requires businesses retain records for 7 years.

Nothing as sophisticated as that, alas. We are a club that has a website, and one of the members has set up a blog, and updates for both are coming from various sources. I'm still to be convinced that the time and effort in setting up a CMS to handle this is justified, and it can'r just be handled by reasonable discipline and procedures within the club.
