Wonder what the vulnerability is? I'd have to suspect it's installing custom firmware (DD WRT) and modifying things that way.

If you have changed the password from the factory default and or turned off remote login you have nothing to worry about. They are not installing custom firmware just logging into the modem and changing the password and DNS servers to point to their evil site.
The first things I always do.
